Shifter suddenly feels like rubber

I was driving last night and suddenly all of the precision in my shifter went out. It has tons of play and feels like rubber when shifting. When it's in gear it still has a little bit of play. I popped off the console, but couldn't see past the rubber boot. I've got about 92,000 miles on my '01. What's going on?

I don't have an answer, but what does your screen name mean? Is it a euphemism for something?

It sounds like one of these internal parts in the shifter has broken http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...y5=SHIFT+LEVER

I would pull the center console off and take the top part of the shifter off and take a look.

i don't know if it's broken or if something just popped loose. i can hear a metallic rattle from something hitting the actual shifter, and every now and then it starts shifting normally again, only to pop back out after a shift or two. transmission fluid hasn't been changed in a while. i'm about to change out all the fluids for the 90,000 service (just not at a dealership)

Removing the boot is tricky to do without destroying it. When mine was frozen up I tore the boot by accident. There is a tool for unhooking the boot holder. It is possible the plastic ball on the end of the shifter is cracked or broken. I bought all the plastic parts for about $20.00. If you take it apart you might as well change all the plastic parts.

des

is that why every boot i ever see online has the boot very "low" on the shifter? mine snuggles up right against the knob and hides the nut that holds the knob on.

always wondered about this.

On mine I cut off some of the threads thus shortening the shifter. The boot I was referring to in the previous post is under the boot that is part of the console.

dust in the shapely buttocks?

seems like a crime.....lest you're a dude.

appears to be a problem below the shifter handle.
exploratory surgery is needed..

had it fixed for a while. just did it again. can't take it back to the same shop because i moved and it's now over 100 miles away. there's gotta be more too it than some part continually breaking. maybe it's just the wrong part being replaced.

With those miles, I'd say order the wear & tear parts from Honda, and rebuild the whole shifter. If there's one shifter on this planet that gets used alot, its ours! A 100,000 mile S2000 has probably been shifted a million times, literally....so it's understandable that the bushings and washers are going to wear out. I rebuilt the shifter in my old car....pretty easy, and definitely worth the relatively small cost of the parts.

If the interior has ever gotten wet it can lead to all kinds of shifter issues. If the shifter spring is not returning the shifter to the upward position then it will not find the gates for different gears. A rebuild would be required and you might need to polish the metal parts inside as well.
