Thinking about starting a turbo kit....

At my weekly meet last night, I talked to the owner of a local performance shop that lowered my car. I asked him what he thought I should do next and of course he said boost it. Im really wanting to but I wont be able to just straight buy a kit. He then suggested buying it peice by piece, which sounds good. Now the big question is.... Where to start? CarGuy hopefully you will have some input

Oh where to start... Many questions to ask before you just start going crazy buying parts. Also consider the fact that often it is easier and cheaper to just buy a complete kit (unless you're a really good shopper). Piecing together everything yourself can be both a headache and a pain when shopping for all the parts.

1) Power goals? (300whp, 350whp, 400whp, 450whp, 500+)
2) How reliable does it have to be? (Is it a daily driver? Weekend warrior?)
3) How much money do you want to spend? (always add ~$1,000-$2,000 to what you "plan" on spending)
4) How streetable do you want it? (moderate, flat torque curve / peaky, high torque curve)
5) Stock compression, 3mm head gasket, or built block?
6) Tubular manifold or cast?

Here's a quick thrown together list of what you'll likely need:
- Turbo
- Turbo manifold
- Oil fittings/lines for oil feed/return and coolant lines (if ball bearing turbo)
- Oil filter relocation (depending on manifold)
- Wastegate
- Dump tube
- Down pipe
- 3" exhaust is recommended
- Intercooler plumbing
- Intercooler
- Blow off valve
- Couplers/t-bolts
- Aftermarket standalone engine management
- Larger fuel injectors
- Walbro 255 fuel pump
- Injector driver (depending on injector)
- Fuel pressure regulator (not always needed)
- Boost control
- 3mm head gasket (depending on setup)
- Higher capacity clutch
- Stronger differential (not required)
- Gauges to monitor vitals (wideband A/F, oil pressure, boost pressure recommended)
- Updated banjo bolts (if MY 00-02)
- Colder spark plugs
- Good tuner
- All hardware to mount and install everything
- Aftermarket MAP sensor

I talked to Triwerks and told him I'm looking to make low 400's on a race tune and around mid 300's on daily driver tune all on stock block. He said they would do all the custom piping and such. I was told that the manifold is a good starting stone, I know it really doesnt matter what i start with. He said after its all set and done he said $6500(overshooting).

Have you started with piecing your kit together? A good manifold for that power range is the SteedSpeed manifold. You'll get great torque.

Don't forget a better differential and clutch. So you don't compromise the reliability.

Yeh hard launching is a big no no in my "S", I ran a Mustang Bullit the other night and after I beat him from a 40 punch he demanded a Launch, I went a head with the idea but never launched my car. I felt like letting him think he was the faster vehicle was the best option, I love my stewie.

An S2000 will take a good launch, but you've gotta slip the clutch a bit first........What's the lesser of the two evils, folks?

burn up a disc?...or destruct the pumpkin?

personally, I'd rather build the diff, than replace the clutch......less intrusive.....not necessarily cheaper. (damage dependant....yeehaa_)

raced a Bullit, aye?

hmmmmmmmm. I smell a closet Fordster.
