For Sale; 72 280zx!

Hey Dudes and Dudettes my friend has a 72 Datsun 280z For Sale $1200 it has NOT run in 2yrs but with some TLC you should be OK. I was going to buy it but I have no where it keep it. Would make a good track car, I'll post some pics.

Is it a Z or a ZX? hard to tell in these pics. I had a ZX with a 350 in it back in the day.

Would consider ditching the S for the right one. This does not qualify. It would be nice to be able to mod the hell out of it without fear of CARB.

OK my friend said $800 is as low as He'll go, I shipped a car from LA to NY for $1000 so it might be cheaper to TX.

I had a '76 280Z that I bought in '78. Just like the one in the nice picture above. Very good car. A real handler and it went good too. 2.8 staight 6 with good torque. I did quite a lot of winter driving, skiing in Montana, etc. and the weight distribution was near perfect. Similar to Stewie in a lot of ways. Problem was rust tho. It started really quick in a few typical locations. (hatch back was bad, as noted in the pics above) Datsun cleaned up their act a bit in '79, with the introduction of the 280ZX. They beefed up the sheet metal and claimed it to be 5 years rust free. Which was pretty good. But I knew a guy who bought an '80 (after the 5 years were up) and the frame was so rusted that when he went to get it inspected, they wrote it off. Also, as mentioned above with the big straight 6, a small block chevy was not a hard conversion. I saw several over the years and it worked well in that light car. There was even a shop in California that was marketing them. Called Scareb. (spelling is wrong, but you get the idea)
I would by another, but it would have to have been stored in Texas or Arizona to get away from the rust.
Same as the AP1 / AP2 comparo, these had the 240/280. Subtle differences but both very good. There was a 260 in between, but it was generally acceptated that it was a dog. If you came across someone that had a 260, you just smiled and felt sorry for them.

Nice, glws. There are many aftermarket replacement parts for the z's. My first ride was a fi 81 280zx. It was my first project car. lots of fun... Ended up Trading it in for a 90 supra.

Cheapest way would be to find a friend with a pickup, drive out, rent a uhaul trailer and trailer it back. Still probably cost $500 for the trailer and gas. Nice old car, I'd love to get it but I already have a 300ZX project car. I have no place to put another project.

If it's a '72, then it's a 240Z as the 280Z didn't come out until 1975 in North America. Both models feature a silky smooth I6. Extensive rust is common and makes many/most restorations prohibitively expensive.

Here's a man that knows his early Z cars. I was scanning the posts to see if anyone else had caught that.

The '72 240 is a very desirable car. If you can find a rust free one it's among the very few "classic" Japanese cars.

You guys beat me! I was going to point that out also. That was a good price for the car IF it's rust free. 240Z's are very collectible these days. I had a '74 260Z but mine was a hybrid. Somebody before me ditched the 'dog' under the hood for the earlier 240Z motor. She was a great runner. That was the first car in my youth that put me at triple digit speeds. I can remember doing over 100mph on bald tires in the rain. Oh, to be young and STUPID again...

But the car barely broke a sweat. My buddy sitting beside me was reading a magazine or something and I remember turning to him and asking how he liked 100mph. He was shocked to say the least. But that's how smooth the car was. The down side to the Z for me was feeling like you were driving from the trunk. I could never get over that feeling when I was on a twisty road. It was like you drove the front of the car and then you followed with your butt in the back. A great touring car but I didn't personally care for it as a canyon carver. But classic Z's still turn my head every time I see one. If I had a collection like Jay Leno, an early Z would be in it for SURE. Congrats to the new owner of this classic car!

I've been wanting one of these to restore/mod for a long time. I love the look of em. Wish I had another spot in the garage for one.

That is, I believe, a 1972 240Z, could be a 71. Inline 6 or course, 2 sidedraft Hitachis stock, Mikunis easily added. Has aftermarket Amco bumper guard front and rear, stock over-riders (missing rubber insert installed 73MY), appears to be sporting 14" Western brand mags, before BBS made basketweave design popular for street racer look.

Commonly rusted at rear window as shown, also driver's footwell notorious, bottoms of doors, rockers, the usual. Rated at 150hp stock, dropped in 73 due to carb/pollution adjustment, back up with advent of 260Z in 74, then finally got some legs again with the injected 280 in late 77. (All this recall; I'm sure Wikipedia would disagree with some of this.)

Though the 240/260/280 share the same body shell, the 72 is the last of the 'real original' 240s in purists minds.

Anyway, great cars, easily modified, won SCCA 'production' for years in their day, Bob Sharp and Paul Newman racing modified versions with great success.

I've had a couple of these. All of us who grew up on MGs, Triumphs LUSTED for these when new. The Japanese had most assuredly, arrived. This car proved it.

I hate to be the 1 to resurrect this thread but I love old datsuns and the 240z is the one that I could never get my hands on. I really miss my 82 280zx turbo and the 1 I will never forgive my brother in law for wrecking was my 1980 10th anniversary edition, I recently found out what its worth.
