hook up my mp3
Hey, I want to hook up my mp3 player (not Ipod, so music link accessory wont work) through my stock s2000 stereo. Can anyone suggest a product? Can it be done through the XM pre-wiring? Thanks in advance!

Don't know about getting the stock one to work, don't care because the stock system is pathetic. I would reccomend getting an aftermarket head unit (love my Alpine) that has the correct inputs/outputs. It will sound much better and have a direct connection to your deck. I have a Creative Labs mp3 player hooked up via a 3.5mm mini jack cable hooked up directly to the back of the Alpine. The wire runs up into the center console through a small drilled hole. I slide the cover shut and nobody even knows its there. Very clean. I would reccomend something like that as opposed to ghetto rigging it to work. Good luck

Thanks for the reply, Blade. Does your Alpine work with your dash controls?

Yeah, the installers said they had some trouble getting it wired since they're not exactly "steering wheel" controls, but they got it to work. I'm pretty sure you have to have a deck that's compatible and even an extra adapter if I remember correctly, no big deal though, just make sure it's compatible. I have the Alpine CDA-9857 deck, which at the time was the cheapest one that was compatible with the steering wheel adapter.

I also have the Apline 9857 deck, which I use to directly control an iPod. As noted you could connect a non-iPod as well. I'm rather pleased with the sound, and I am picky. Installation was easy. There is a wiring harness I got from GoFastLab that connects the dash controls to the Apline. Also has a speed senstive volume adjuster as well, rather nice. My only gripe is the ergonomics of the deck. Changing iPod playlists is clumsy (you cannot have song mix on to access playlists, why???). Working the menu system is clumsy. But then again that's how I feel about most Japanese conusmer electronics - clumsy interfaces.
Other than that I can recommend the deck and the wiring adapter. |
