smell from air conditioner

I have an foul smell coming from the air conditioner. Anyone know how to get to the "root" of this. I know there are filters and such typically and some cars are easy to get at and others not. Typically under the dash. Anyone with experience on this? Information appreciated. JEH 2000 S20000

As mentioned above, change the filter, it's not that hard. Here is what my last one looked like when I changed it:

I know for a FACT that the last year of production of the S2000 is 2003!!!!!
After that, it will be the S2200 under an assumed name.

I did it and it was easy!!! Once I was pointed in the right direction. Thanks guys. That saved me money and a run to the dealers. All kinds of "boogers" in there. Got to smell better now. I doubt it was ever changed. John H

Oh my god...I didn't even know we had one of these. I have 100k miles on the car and have never changed it. I'm wondering what is growing on mine.

I change mine about every 15-20k. I find leaves and feathers as well as dust.
