Braille Battery

Hi - new to the forum. I was wondering if anyone uses the Braille battery? I'm a nut for weight saving and a buddy of mine uses it in his car (Subaru) and recommended it to me. I was wondering if anyone has tried one out in the S2000.

I have had one for over a year now. I love it

This is not my first lightweight battery as I have used them for years in all my sporty cars. They last, They crank well. But they won't take a long slow drain like leaving the radio on for hours while the car isn't running

None of those low capacity batteries are practical for cars that have any drain when turned off and are not plugged into a charger all the time when they are parked. The batteries sulphinate and fail in short order. The only batteries which can take that treatment are Optima Yellow tops and sadly Optima no longer makes a D51 which fits the S. I tried one and it failed in warranty, and they gave me a full refund. They told me recently they will not make another small Optima battery. I also tried an Odyssey PC925 and it could handle the S either.

"Optima no longer makes a D51 which fits the S."

Sears has a new "platinum" AGM battery that they claim is better than the spiral wound "Optima" units. Don't know if they make it in our size. They run about $150

Johnson Controls owns Optima and Odyssey as well other aircraft brand batteries. They also make all the batteries for Sears, Kragen, Pepboys and most house labeled batteries in the world.

How many amp hour capacity does it have?

Johnson Controls owns Optima, Odyssey and makes all the batteries for Sears, Kmart, Kragen and every other battery store in the world practically. So I doubt it. Unless it's an Odyssey in sheep's clothing.

They could be making it especialy for Sears. All batteries are not created equal. Even the Die Hards will vary according to climate regions. Or, Sears could be using more than one supplier. I'll check further.

Yeah, as usual, Phil's correct. The "same" battery is not always the same battery. Ya godda go by the best spec sheet.
N' jus' what's to be gained by the loss of a reliable battery?
Be well.

If you could find a light weight battery that could manage all the accessories it would be a good thing. But as I said before I tried and Odyssey PC925 which is an AGM type(the civic preferred) size and it did not last. It was 26 amp/hr and weighed 20 lbs., as apposed to the stock flooded electrolyte battery which has 36 am/hr capacity and weighs close to 40 lbs. Most AGM chemistry batteries require to be kept at full charge or they will sultanate. To do this it needs to be on a charger whenever it is not being driven. Not very practical. They start the car fine but have short lifespans and cost a lot more than the flooded electrolyte antique we have. I have been investigating Lithium Ion technology. It has all the possibilities to produce a 10 pound battery but will require some electronics to regulate the charging regime.

Here is a little battery info. I have an Optima battery to start my diesel motor home. Mainly because it's sealed and I don't have to remove it to check the water. It seems to hold up very well in a vehicle that sits for months at a time. I also use a "smart" battery charger that can de-sulfate a battery.

Here is a link to a battery article. The sears Platinum is an AGM.

Optima's are great batteries and it's unfortunate that they made one that fit the S and it was faulty. And they will not build an Optima that small again.
