sub in the trunk

When i bought my s2000, i stood there looking at the trunk. wondering how the hell i was gonna put a sub in it, and still have room for groceries. well i figured it out. i run a cnc router cam at work, and i took the measurments of that little square hole where the jack and lug wrench is. and cut a piece of 3/4" acrylic plex, to fit perfectly, rounded corners on top and flanged so it doesnt fall through, and a center drop 12" hole for the sub, it sounds good too. i'm not trying to sell anything, just wonderin if anyone else was interested. i can try to post some pics if anyone wants. take care all.

I have a Boston Acoustics 10.5 LF which only needs a 1/2 cu ft box. If you find a high quality efficient subwoofer and put in an acoustic enclosure it won't even use 1/2 the trunk well. Most audio shops only want to sell enclosures that fill the whole trunk and then fill the box with wadding. If the box is sized correctly no wadding is necessary.

Would love to see some larger pics

In the process of doing the same thing but with 3/4" MDF. I wasn't planning on putting back the carpet pieces but, if it's easy I might. Most importantly, I would like to see how you sealed up the side that is facing the rear of the car. TIA

hey JRZ i used 1/2" rubber weather strip foam tape to seal around the plexi glass plate. its heavy enough that it stays down and no air pumps out.

Hey PRB, I didn't know that they have 1/2" foam. I have 1/4" that I was going to use on the edge where the board meets the tub. Are you saying that you used that on the rear side where there is nothing for the plexy to sit on only touching the vertical latch? Do you have any large pics? Thanks

OB1, my tools are bagged up and put into/on top of the spare and I'm pretty sure everyone else who keep the spare is doing also.

mechanically you did a very nice job but the design is pretty ruff. Its not quiet free air and its not sealled.

Interesting. I didn't know that you've made it be that accessible. Mines going to be a little more permanent with rubbery goo compound coating the entire tub and a piece of 3/4" MDF board that is going to be bolted on top with a Solobaric 12" L7. About to go in the garage now to finish up my wiring and mounting 6.5" in the rear. I'll probably drive around like that for a little bit then finish up the sub when I get bored. Be back on later 2nite.

its hard to make everything perfect when you start from scratch. i can design and manufact, but understanding air space volumes is not my forte.

I've got a 2003 that I bought this spring. Has a commercially available sub mounted in the same spot. Amp is mounted next to the spare tire. I talked to the guy that used to own it, said he took it into a stereo shop and told them he couldn't hear the stock radio. You can hear it now. Also has an Eclipse radio and new speakers in the door. I found an adapter that allows using the stock volume control (to the left of the steering wheel) work through the remote control input.

Just FYI z-enclosure makes a custom box that has 1 cubic foot for the air space and its under 150 bucks, and comes up to a 12" sub woofer i have one on the way and the carpet matches exactly to whats already in the trunk and u can still leave the tools in the space and it is easy to remove since its basically a flat peice of mdf cut to fit the hole and the box nailed then sealed in place its really nice all mdf professionally made.
