Thanks!
I thought about getting the 9886... but it was essentially the same as the 9885 and I could save $50. I was really on the fence though... then Crutchfield included a free iPod connector, that sealed the deal. What did you use to keep your dash controls?

Modifry FTW! I think the 9886 adds the USB interface. I just have my songs on a thumb drive that I keep in the car. A lot easier than worrying about an mp3 player. Good luck with the install! |

Thanks man. Radio just came in today. Might install tonight, but I have something for work till late. I won't be home till like 11 pm. I got the plug n play harness, so I don't see this taking any longer than 30 minutes or so. Running the iPod cable to the glove box will be the longest part. It will definitely be nice to not have to solder any wires! I always hated that part.

I have been looking at a radio upgrade for my 06' car. If you dont mind answering a few questions. How difficult was the unit to install? Does Crutchfield provide good quality instructions, I am mostly worried about breaking the plastic around the radio doing it myself? How difficult was it to install the equipment that allows you to use the dash stereo controls? Finally, with this unit installed can you still fully close the radio cover?
Thanks, sorry to ask so many questions. |

i have alpine 9886 and it took no time to install, i too was worried about breaking plastic but it came out fairly easy. Mine is able to shut still, as long as u dont get a hu that sticks out alot you should be fine. Theres a link on the web somewhere with some basic directions that are handy but not nessary. install was pretty easy. If u buy a hu from circuit city or best buy they normally install for free if your worried about it

Thanks for the reply. I was talking to the sales guy at Best Buy last week. He said that I have to get a Pioneer to be able to use the steering wheel controls. I know that is not true. I believe that Alpine makes the stock S2K radio, so it would seem that it should work better with the factory controls?
I would rather have the Alpine. Best Buy didn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling. Has anyone else used them? |

I try to avoid Worst Buy at all costs, however I did buy my HU from them. I had a 12% off coupon and a $50 gift card from buying an HDDVD player there so I as able to get a 9886 for about $230. I couldn't pass up that deal. Good luck with the purchase.

Install Update:
I installed the radio Friday night and it took about an hour (including the time it took to set up the SCV for the Modifry DCI). Crutchfield sent me specific install instructions with actual pictures of the S2000 install, which was surprising. I was really expecting generic instructions! My wife hung out with me and was able to follow along very easily just using the Crutchfield instructions. If you have never done one before, buy from Crutchfield! It is a very easy install. I placed the Modifry DCI under the radio and accessible by removing the panel on the passenger side of the radio bay (one screw and a light pull... very easy). The only part I was unsure about was the SCV wire, but that took all of 5 minutes and was very simple. I did experience some issues with the DCI. The dash controls would randomly go out. I pulled the HU and noticed that the 3.5mm jack was loose. This was caused by trying to cram all the wired and radio back into the bay. A little finagling and the problem was solved. I was originally going to run the iPod cable to the glove box, but I changed my mind when I realized that the iPod would not turn off when I turned off my car. This could be because I have an old iPod, not sure. I ran the cable to the net/pocket on the passenger side - this is very easy to reach and hides the wire. Also, it is a great place to put the iPod when plugged in and had great air circulation (it tends to get hot when plugged in for a while). All in all, I'm thrilled with the head unit; it sounds great and work perfectly. With the Modifry instructions, the plug n' play harness, and the photo walk-through from Crutchfield, I'm pretty sure my dog could do this install. Next will be door speakers, but for now, the sound is pretty good. Thanks for everyone's opinions!
