Is your cruise control ever used?

Hey guys

I just realized something, I have yet to use the cruise control on my S2k and Ive had it for about a year now. Come to think of it, I don't think I have EVER used CC on any of my cars.

Just curious if you guys use it or not

And I have heard that CC actually saves you gas since you're not constantly accelerating and staying at a consistent speed. Is this true? I guess the fundamentals make sense but I would figure it would be the other way around.

Use it a lot. It does give you better gas mileage because it's much more sensitive to speed and a constant speed is the best way to save gas.

Constant speed or constant throttle will give the best gas mileage.

Had to use mine. When I picked mine up I had a 400 mile drive to get back home. You bet I used it! I was getting over 30 MPG or so!

Wow that's pretty impressive. I get like 15mpg. I love to downshift and hit vtec all the time so CC is just not feasible for me. I'll def consider it if I ever decide to take it to Vegas or something.

OK I have a really stupid question....let's say you're going 80MPH in 6th gear and you turn on CC. Then you approach an incline, like driving up a small hill or mountain. I'm assuming the spedomotor will stay at 80, but will your RPM climb? The CC is just an electrical function that operates the throttle for you, correct? haha sorry, I've always wondered about this but never tried it myself

Every day, both for mileage and to keep me from speeding - I always set 10 over (which works with the highway patrol here). My only ticket in the last 20 years was a day when I was spacing listening to the radio and forgot to set it, drifted up to 15 over in a construction zone...

No the RPM's will not climb.
I use cruse control sometimes. Keeps me ticket proof.

^ I beleive that the rpm's would change. They would have to in order to maintain the same speed ( increase going uphill, decrease going downhill ) slightly ?

I have never turned the master cruise control button off since the day I got the car back in 2002. I use the CC very often.

Unless your clutch is slipping the RPM won't change with a manual transmission assuming you maintain constant speed. The load on the engine will increase and the fuel and air flow will go up but not the RPM.

Back to the original question, I use mine for long trips but nothing else.

I use my CC once in a while. If I'm on a long drive it certainly helps with fuel economy to stay at a consistant speed. Like others have said, I set it at about 10mph over the speed limit. I just need to tap the brake or push it the clutch to disengage.

to maintain a constant speed the rpm must also remain constant in a given gear.

i use the cc all the time.

Well, just to confirm one way or the other if the RPM's change, I set my cruise control at 68mph/4000RPM on the way to work this morning. Going down hill, the speed was 68mph and the revs were 4000, going up the hill (both downhill and uphill grades roughly the same), the speed varied a bit from 68 to 67, the revs dropped from 4000 to one bar below 4000RPM. So from this scientific experiment we can hypothesize that the speed and the revs remain constant uphill or down....

I use cruise control when I am trying to behave on parts of the highway where I know troopers are present. Thats the only way I can keep myself out of trouble. Just too tempting to drive fast!

When you go up hill, the gas pedal goes down, just as it would were you driving it up hill. When the load gets too high for the gear the cruise disengages. FYI it's best to not use CC on hills. Get up speed on the down side and the momentum helps on the upside, saving gas.

Actually my friend, either constant speed or constant throttle will save gas. So keep the pedal on the floor, that is the best way to achieve constant throttle.

RPM with CC only change in Automatic transmissions when the car can not maintain speed in the gear it is in. If the hill were that steep, the car would probably lose RPM and miles per hour if it had a manual transmission.

I use my CC every day in the S and wish I had CC in my TP Cruiser.

Nothing stops you from accelerating with cruise control. You can go as fast as you want (or dare or is safe) and once you let off the accelerator, you slow back to the set cc speed. Do it all the time for those clowns who can't keep a steady speed going down hills.

Only when on longer trips. Very little of my driving in the S is on roads where having cruise control on makes sense. That stated, we just made the trip to Sedona Arizona and the Grand Canyon and my cruise control got a lot of usage. I averaged 28 miles to the gallon during this trip overall and I credit a lot of that to highway miles with the cruise on.

I wish I had cruise control on my daily driver since it sees a lot of freeway time. During the unusual situations where traffic is clear enough to allow for it, I really wish I had it on that car.

I use CC on my S2K and any car I drive. I can pull a 7% Interstate grade in 6th gear at constant 70 miles per hour- no problem. The most enlightening thing about CC is you get to see just how out to lunch many drivers are. Some drive along for miles in a coma until you go to past them and their "Buddy" genes kick in and they speed up just to be close. These little brother types hang on to my tail until I accelerate out of their gravity detector range and they eventually lapse back into their comas.
