Additional key and remote prices.

Allright so heres my story. Yesterday I went to my local Honda dealership to ask about a new set of keys and remote for my car (as I only have one set). He said that hes able to transfer the code over to another set of keys but it's gonna cost money. Here's the prices he gave me.

Key: $40 + transfer = $79. (gonna round up to $80)
Remote: $99. Will be able to lock/unlock doors as well as trunk (rounding to $100).
Valet key: Not really needed as I would not let someone random drive my car, but would like it because it makes my car feel whole.... $80.

So I'm looking at around $180 for an AP1 key plus remote. Does this price sound reasonable to you? Have any of you guys recently gotten a new pair of keys made for you?

NOTE: I have searched this site for this info. The last post was back in March. I'm gonna assume the prices have changed. Also I bought this car from a guy and not a dealership so I have no 'warranty'.

I have another dealership to go to today. Maybe they can give me a better deal. I'll update this maybe tomarrow.

Yes, the price for keys, programming and remote is what you will expect to pay. I work at a Honda dealership and the price you were quoted is right in line with what we charge.

Try ebay for remotes but if it says "fully tested and functioning" watch out, it's used. I got one for my wife's Xterra and for a few bucks more, I could have had a new one. My original one was functioning the day before it died.
This one on ebay is new, but who knows what it will go for when the bidding is done : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1997-...Q5fAccessories
Others I checked are used.
Here's another new one : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HONDA...Q5fAccessories

I don't know if the links will work, but you can check ebay yourself. They usually give you programming instructions.

So then, whats the going rate for a convertible top with a glass window? I was quoted $500 + $200 with installation.
The quote I got was from a mom and pop place.

That's cheap a Honda hardtop costs a lot more than that.

Desmo4 I think you misread my statement. I quoted a price on a convertible top. Not a hardtop.

I'll talk to my guys about a conv top and installation, but it's gonna be a lot more than the mom and pop quoted price. It'll be a new top from Honda, plus the dealer labor rate is anywhere from 100 to 140/hr. If I remember correctly the factory option blue top was about $1400 plus labor. This is one where you want a shop that works on conv tops to do it for you.

UPDATE: So I shopped around and one of the Honda delearships offered me a T5 key (data transfer). They cut it and it worked. Total cost $64.15. Saved me like $20.
So if you guys ever need another key, maybe you can shop around. I was able to shop around because I had 2 Honda delearships within 10 miles of each other. If you live out in the farmland areas, and there's only 1 Honda within the nearest 50 miles of your location, I guess your stuck.

Went to Walmart got an key cut and programed for $50. Works fine. Got a working used remote on ebay for $15 shipped. The dealership is way out of line with prices.

I guess I got lucky. When I purchased my '02 last month it came with only one key. Of course only an idiot would believe he could get away with going through life never misplacing or losing his only key. Not wanting to be that guy, I figured I would just go have another key cut at my local hardware store. When I got back out to the car I was pleased to discover that it worked fine ... until I tried to start my car. I've never had a car with a microchip-embedded key required to start it, so I was a bit befuddled as to what the hell was wrong with the new key. I finally figured it out and realized that I would probably have to go through Honda to get a working replacement.

Bottom line: Went to a local Honda dealership parts and service department here on Oahu and was quoted the following -- $25 for the blank, and $25 for cutting and programming. I thought the dealer (I hate dealerships) was trying to take me for a ride, but needing a backup key, went ahead and had them hook me up. With military discount (which I managed to weasel out of them) I actually ended up only paying $42 and some change. Well worth it for the piece of mind.

Wow PocketRocketMan. Thats a pretty good deal. I wish I paid $42 for my key. I paid $60ish but it was worth it for the piece of mind. You should ALWAYS have 2 sets of keys.
