Portable nav system

Any suggestions on the best place to mount a Garmin nav system?
In California, mounting them on the windshield seems to be a big no-no.
Many thanks in advance.

Actually, you *can* mount the device on the windshield but it has to be in the lower left or lower right corner of the windshield.

If you google it, you can probably find the exact law. Senate Bill 1567, the GPS Windshield Safety Act

Here are some other alternatives...

http://www.modifry.com/products/index.htm Just click on the "mounts" link

I've also found that you can mount the nav's suction cups on the center console (the thing that retracts)....but it's a bit goofy with shifting - see for yourself. Let us know if you come up with anything different

Take the metal disc that comes in the box and glue (or Velcro) it to the dash above the speedometer.

I have had no issues with mine and CA. I have it on the dash as Kgf says over the radio so it it is out of my line of sight. In addition, when my jammer is clobbering the police signal they can see the gps in my car and don't give me a second look. Misdirection is wonderful.

J, are you there? Can you design a mount that fits in the area where the vents are over the radio? That seems like a good spot and I never use those vents anyway.

Someone on either here or S2Ki installed one of the Euro-spec nav units in their dash. I'm not sure I'd even want that...but it did look very nice. Messy as hell to install though - dust everywhere.

Anyone actually use their map pocket behind their drivers seat? I just realized how useless this damn thing is...O-well, can't blame Honda for trying

+1 for the Modifry bracket but you'd need to attach something to old your GPS.

I put some velcro on the right side of the radio cover (when it is opened), and on the flat disc that comes with the nav unit. it fits perfect and most of the time you can see the screen even with the top down because the dash cast enough of a shadow on it. and because it is mounted with velcro it remains very portable.

I am using the Modifry bracket and I used Velcro to attach the GPS unit to. Makes it very easy to remove it when I park the car.
