Welcome to the club and the site. I would change the oil using conventional oil unless the previous owner could show you that he/ she had it done before they sold it to you. I would suggest not changing to synthetic oil until 10,000 miles. Just a suggestion.

Honda did issue a Service Bulletin which you can look at here: Service Bulletin Here are the relevant portions: "During the first 600 miles (the car's break-in period), the engine may consume even more than a quart of oil; customers should add Honda 10W-30 or other high-quality petroleum-based oil of that viscosity to the factory-fill oil....." and "Because the piston rings, piston rod bearings, cam bearings, and crankshaft main bearings continue to "break in" during the first 5,000 to 7,500 miles, factory-fill oil is provided in the engine of the delivered car. The factory fill oil has special additives, so it should be left in the engine until the first oil change: 7,500 miles under "Normal Conditions." "Do not use any synthetic oil for the first 7,500 miles. Synthetic oil is excellent protection for the car's engine, but it should not be used before 7,500 miles since it will not allow the rings, bearings, etc. to "break in" properly." Since some people change their oil every 5,000 miles (hand raised), 10,000 would be a nice round number to go by.

That means you CAN find out. You bought a Honda from a Honda dealer. Ask them to check their service records on the vehicle.

Not to diss Honda or anything, but saying that synthetic oils do not allow rings and seals to seat properly is urban legend. Plenty of high performance vehicles ship with Mobil-1 as factory fill.

ya I dont buy that for one second. On a side note I change my oil every 3 k miles. You know why? Cause im weird like that and my vehicles besides my project vehicles usually last well over 200k and id like to keep it that way. Now my project vehicle i change it once every 2 k or sooner and it breaks down like 1-40 times a week

Go's on the money about the use of regular oil initially. It allows wear that the synthetic does not (read: it allows the parts to "mate" sooner) and that wear allows things to get friendly makin' for the smoothest operation ASAP.
Be well. Java

The only thing about the Honda bulletin that makes any sense is their note that the factory fill oil has some "special additive". Apparantly Honda doesn't put "just" oil in the crankcase at the factory. If that is the case then don't use synthetic until they tell you to. But otherwise synthetics are safe to use in the crankcase as soon as the engine is first bolted together.
Lethander, as far as which oil you "should" use, you are thinking too much about this. Its as if you fear if you use the "wrong" oil your engine will fall appart. Honda oil, Mobil-1, Halvoline, Red Line. Any quality motor oil, with a Honda filter, changed regularly, you will be fine. |
