S2000 Break in

What's the punishment for not waiting 600 miles before red-lining?
I may have got a little crazy yesterday at about 200 miles

Engine Explosion.......but it's too late now. might as well sell it.

I'll give ya $500.00 PM me so I know where to meet you to sign the title.

ok, kidding.

Probably should lay off it like Ma Honda says......'n hope you didn't cause any premature wear or improper seating of anything in the engine.
It'll likely be fine.

I test drove an 08 in December (chose not to buy at this time since I need to concentrate on having money for grad schoo) but I drove the hell out of that car. Red lined it on second because I wassent familiar with how fast the revs climb when u hit vtec.
But when I was done I started thinking about the break in period and felt bad for the next owner. I know when I get my new S I will make sure i break it in right.

Trust me, (....sounds sinister, doesn't it?)

If anyone from the selling dealer got their hands on a stewie before it got sold, she'd already been run hard.
That car likely came off the truck with 4-6 miles on the clock, tops........could you have access to it and resist?
I've never been able to. yeeeehaaaa!!!!

I know its hard not to want to go fast, and to see what the car is capable off. Having my new S in October 07 I was just driving around and just happened to get involved in a race on the highway, next thing I know I'm doing 170km hr and pulling away from an Acura.
I think you'll be o.k. now that you have had it out of your system, I was !
Its just a feeling that the car just wants to go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and sometimes you've just go to hold on and go with it . ( But common sence driving for the next couple of weeks will be worth it ...........just to be sure )
Drive safe,

Neil

I know i broke 6k RPM's a few times during break in, and during the test drive. Thats not including the 27 miles on the odometer before i got to the car.
Just dont go overboard with it.

My personal feelings on the subject is that those engines that were not broken in properly are the ones that burn the most oil. My car was ordered and the only person that drove it before me was the salesman that took it to the gas station and filled it up for me. I watched him drive it down the road and he did it the correct way. I did not go above VTEC for the first 600 miles and my car has burned ZERO oil in 32,000 miles. That includes years of autoX's and numerous track days.

Again, this is just my personal experience and what my feelings are.

I know for a FACT that the last year of production of the S2000 is 2003!!!!!
After that, it will be the S2200 under an assumed name.

gomarlins I agree with you completely, and i think any new owner needs to break it in. But there is no big deal with exceeding it once since you know everyone who test drove the car before had to vtec it several times. I dont think anyone can get inside one of these cars and not rev it up. Its even hard for a concerned owner.

Yep, it is hard, I think I hit vtec at 602. Really, though, those slide rule guys at Honda gotta know it's going to happen, I think they just recommend not doing it much so everything seats well and the joints harden properly. How you take care of it the rest of the time is probably more important.

You think our break in period is bad? I have been doing some research into a Cayman and Porsche's break in period is to not go above 4,000 RPM's for 2,000 miles. YIKES!!!

You said it GM3, my last German was 1200 miles for break-in, with the low rpm restriction. I obeyed.....but it was hard.

I don't know how my S2K was broken in, as I purchased it used......but my total lack of oil consumption leads me to believe that it was done correctly. Even with the dinosaur oil that was in it at purchase, It never discolored over the 3k miles that it was in there, and never lost a drop.

There is no right or wrong. Some of the best engine builders in the world say to break in a motor some of the best engine builders in the world say to beat the hell out of it right outa the box. Personally I am for beating it right out of the box. My engine builder and all my friends engine builders say the engine is ready for abuse as soon as the last nut is tight just make sure you have it tuned on the dyno before ya go ripping on it.

isu, what do you tune? I've heard about that dyno work but never heard any specifics on what you can actually adjust and why.

My s2000 is not tuned. My impulse has a haltech standalone on it. I can adjust fuel, timing, timing for different temperatures same with fuel, revlimiter. Basically everything the motor needs to run.
