Just Checking In
Just checking in to say HELLO and to introduce myself.
I am new to the site, but not new to S2Ks. I am so EXCITED to say that I am a very proud owner of a brand new 2008 Red S2K (my surprise Christmas present)! I purchased a new 2004 S2K and had it for two years. At the time I traded it, I needed a more practical vehicle for domestic reasons (got a Pilot and I really like the SUV,too). But, after I did that - I went into withdrawal, had the DTs, became depressed (I'm laughing), but really - I did want my car back. I called the dealership (for several days) and told them that, but after all was said and done - I kept the Pilot (and still have it). So, with all that said - I am HAPPY to say that I am alive and kicking, back in the saddle and on the edge. And, it feels GREAT! I really, really love my new baby! ![]() ![]() ![]() I'll send pics later if anyone would like to see them. |

Hi guys! Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm looking forward to roaming around in here. Even though I'm just getting reacquainted with my baby, there is still a lot of information I'm inquisitive about.
I remember the basics - get in, turn the key, push the button and GO! Oh yeah, and buckle up. I AM a safety girl. It's been a year since I traded my first S2K, but it feels like I never got out of it. Everything just feels right! But, this second time around - I would like to develop a good knowledge base of information for this power machine. I did have a bad experience with my first one. I had the car about two weeks and I got caught up in the weird snowstorm (unusual for this area) along with black ice. I was going over an overpass on the interstate and all of a sudden the car went into a tailspin ALL over the road. YIKES! I finally stopped on a grassy embankment (with no guard rail). Needless to say, I was petrified! A policeman had to talk me out of the situation. I was really scared to try to back the car off the grass and he finally had to start yelling at me to get me to move. We both knew I had to get myself out of the situation. He told me to put the emergeny brake on and ease up on the clutch slowly. I finally did it, but then I was facing oncoming traffic. He let me go down an off ramp to get off the interstate. It took me nine hours to get home that night (I was only 45 minutes from my house) due to the conditions and accidents. Cars were sliding all over the place. It's a miracle I didn't collide with anyone. So, after that mishap - I didn't get back in the car for over two weeks. It took me a while to gain a comfort level back. I was even reluctant to drive in the rain (still am to some degree). I think I need to know about slip differential and stabilization?? Feel free to correct me and/or send me in the right direction. Although, no one has much control on an icy road, but it would be helpful to know how to react, or how not to react. Just wondering...does anyone (guys or gals) have any issues driving in the rain? |

I don't. I have had the wipers on twice in the 6+ years I have had Stiletto. I still have the original OEM wiper blades on the car.

There not much you can do when you hit black ice except stay calm, ride it out and try not to over correct.
But none of this will happen in this car because you now own and NFR! |

'Ello Lady.
After readin' your tale, I restate my initial suggestion . . in spades: get thee to a driver'z school. Loss of traction comes in many flavors. It's rain, snow, pea-gravel, leaves, small animals, cold road surface/warm weather rubber, sudden drop 'r rise in road surface n' a vast array'uv other things that all tend ta make ya go slippy-slidey in'a night. And then there'z the variety supplied by travellin' in a 4 wheeled conveyance. You can lose traction with one, two, three, 'r my personal favorite, four wheels. The end result is always somethin' other than normal straight-forward progress and usually somethin' different every time. Unless you have someone that is familiar with driving rear-wheel drive vehicles that's willin' to spend time with you n' teach you the ropes, the school'z the best chunk'a money that you could spend on you n' Stewie. I'm not at all familiar with what they cost anymore, but what did your little adventure in the story you related almost cost you? Aaaay! Lady! Ya spent yer hard-earned for Stewie. Why not get the best, most fun n' safest use oud'a it that you can? What you learn in the school will be with you long after Stewie leaves your stable n' you will not be disappointed. Whudduyadoon still sittin' there????? Be well, Java

Here is the thing though. Hit black ice in any vehicle and bad things can happen. Your NEW S2000 is equipped with traction control..called vehicle stability assist I think. They SHOULD call it the "Old person can't react quick enough safety button". Thats how I use it. This button didnt come on your old car. This button makes it impossible for you to mash the gas, spin out and hit a saturn. You can still go into a curve/corner too fast and end up in the toolies, but we slow reactors can now mash the gas pedal with impunty. Some of the more brash youngsters could use this button as well!
I sometimes turn this button off. This is called "stupidity override". I do this so I can fishtail about and be a general nuisance. Carefull doing this though..as you may wet your pants. But then..in my case anyway..as an old person, this is expected behavior. Bottom line is..A little fear is a healthy thing in our case. Definately if you can put it together, go to a driving school as JJ says. In fact take me with you please? |

Java is right, the S is very sensitive to rubber. If you are on the stock warm weather tires, don't even think about driving when the temp. is under 40 degrees. If you want to drive it, the best thing to do is get a second set of wheels and some cold weather tires. I live in Richmond and I did exactly that Because RE-01R's will not work in the winter I have a set of Dunlop P5000 Asymetrico's on my stock wheels and they work very well in cold weather.

I agree with everyone who mentioned tires. It's often the difference between moving and not moving. If you have the space and must drive it in adverse seasons, a separate set of wheels and dedicated tires will help.

Lady, I would say don't let that incident daunt you, it was the weather, not the car. I agree with Java on this one - if you really want to get the most out of your baby take a defensive driving course, they're amazingly valuable. It sounds like you weren't a stupid kid like me growing up, pushing the limits of your car and learning the edge of what you could get away with (and occasionally not - that's how you learn the edge). A good course shows you what you can do, and best of all makes it so that this kind of thing doesn't come up for you first in the real world - everything's easier with practice!
And have fun, it's worth it. =scott |
