I remember being glued to the tv watching him take those first few steps and saying that famous sentence, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". Always remembered.

Bummer. Sad day.

The actual quote was, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

I read somewhere a while ago that he actually said "One small step for A man, one giant leap for mankind." (emphasis added) I don't remember the source, but there was discussion about whether he had dropped the "a", or it got lost in a transmission glitch.

Presto: The specifics of that are explained on wikipedia. It has been neither proved or disproved if he said the "a" or not. Not to minimize the importance of why that one little letter makes such a huge difference, we all know what he meant so I think we will forgive him. He was, after all, making history and walking on the moon.

I wasn't trying to imply that he screwed up or anything! Hahaha! Nothing could be farther from that! I knew there was some discussion about whether the "a" was there or not but, like you, I never really thought it was important in comparison to the event itself.

I'm not sure if there is any group of people that I am more in awe of than the astronauts that took part in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. As far as I'm concerned those guys were just...well, they were real, live "Supermen", with strengths and abilities far beyond the rest of us.

Watch the Apollo 11 lunar module landing on YouTube. You can hear the voice (Aldrin?) counting off the seconds of fuel that they have left. It gets down to less than 30 seconds of fuel before they touchdown! And they are just as cool as can be about it! Amazing! I get chills every time I watch it!

The pressure of being the first person to walk on the moon and having to say something epic about it as you are doing it.

Luckily, he came through.

Requiescat in pace Mr. Armstrong.
