Tell them to look at Consumer Reports "Best and Worst" cars. Funny how most of the best are Japanese and worst are American (in general). I'll stick with my Hondas and Toyotas.

Me:
'01 S2000 63k mi.
'91 Toyota pickup 243k mi.

In a capitalist economy, the consumer votes with their purchasing power. People choose cars for many reasons, and if North American manufacturers made anything that could compete with the s2000, I'm sure it would be considered. The truth is, they don't.

The closest thing is the Ion redline or the Solstice. Both cars did not compare to the S2000 in magazine testing because of build quality and lesser handling. Most other industry publications compare the s2000 to a BMW z4 or a Porsche Boxster, not the rental car fleet fodder that is the current staple of North American manufacturers.

You should ask them if they know what country their chevy or ford is made. I usually say as soon as they build a car worth buying I will go domestic. There are a few domestics id own but I hate when people complain about buying imported vehicles.

Not only is it compared to Z4 and Boxter but it did better than them in almost ever one of the comparisons (handleing, speed, price ect.).

I would love to buy an american car, but the one I like is not made here. This country prides itself in the "free enterprise system", well nobody can give you s*&% for getting the best product your money can buy.

well nowadays all domestic car companys are building their cars outside of the united states (mexico) and all the foreign car companys are building inside the united states (toyota, honda, and mitsubishi). So does it really matter what the make is?,,,lol

Rick, I think it all comes down to R&D and technology. Japan's Big 2 seem to be ahead of America's Big 3. I can't believe when one of my patients is so stoked to get a new Chevy, Dodge or Ford and 2000 miles later it needs a new tranny or something. Sure, it's under warranty, but who's to say it's not gonna happen again.
I've beat the crap out of my Toyota truck and only had to replace the clutch once, the radiator twice (not the greatest radiators, but then again, you are supposed to flush them every now and then), tires, brakes and oil. Oh yea, the timing chain tensioner once and a couple of batteries. Not bad for 243k on the odo.
There are American cars I like, I personally trust Honda and Toyota more.

QUALITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't really care where it comes from as long as it's not a piece of crap. It just rubs me the wrong way to spend $40,000 for a vehicle that has to be returned to the dealer over and over again to get things fixed.

The Chevys and Fords I've owned have been problems. The Hondas and Toyotas have not been problems. Easy decision.

If it weren't for pressure from overseas, Detroit would still be using technology from the 1930s. People better wake up to the fact that a global economy is happening. Who makes their tv's, vcr's microwaves, etc, etc?

And lets not forget that GM recently issued a recall for every single Solstice & Sky for some sort of fluid failure that could "cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle" As far as I am concerned there is NOTHING and I mean NOTHING in the same class as the S2000 as far as Value, Performance, Balance, Handling, Price, build quality, styling & reliability are concerned. Like Car & Driver said in their "Breaking The Rules" comparison test in 2001 when the S2000 beat the Mercedes SLK, BMW Z3M & Porsche Boxter "We did not include the Mazda Miata in our test because the S2000 would have it for lunch and not even bother to spit out the bones" GOD I love these cars!

Tell them to look at the "source" data on the detail sheets on their cars at the dealer. It may be "final assembled" in the US but the parts are all foreign... Especially the little chip that makes it run, there hasn't been a chip plant here since the dot com bust.

Neil,

Let them drive it and then see what they say. I've let a few guys drive mine and they were all pleasantly surprised. If they don't like it then it's their loss... Good luck, this tends to happen a lot when you drive an S2K. I am reminded of the phrase, "People always fear what they don't understand..."

Consumer Reports shows that even most German cars are poor on reliability. The Mercedes and VW's score pretty bad. I was a VW and BMW guy before. Now I like my cars from the land of the rising sun.

How about "Thank you for your opinion. Can I give you a ride to the repair shop so you can get your vehicle back?"

I know for a FACT that the last year of production of the S2000 is 2003!!!!!
After that, it will be the S2200 under an assumed name.

The car I drove before Stewie was a 2002 civic SI. I had 10k to spend, and was looking for something in the sport compact department. It boiled down to two cars, an 05 cavalier with 12k miles, or an 02
