New England winters!

I'm a newbie here and am considering buying an S2000 in the next month. I have 2 questions for the list: 1. Does anyone use their vehicle where it snows frequently and if so, do snow tires help? This will be my only vehicle so I'm wondering how practical it is although here in Newport we usually don't get as much snow as inland. 2. Do they really run only on premium?

Thanks,

Frogman

Welcome Froggy,
Yup on the premium and someone will chime in on the tires.
I live in Santa Barbara, California. Don't need no snow tires here.

Thanks Dr. Jimbo, I am assuming that I will get better mileage with an S2000 than I do with my 4x4 Tacoma so maybe the cost of premium will be justified.

Living in Canada we sometimes get a little snow ( November to March ) there are some local guys who run their car all year. Snow tires are definatly a must.
My car is just for the fair weather..............I'm lucky !
Premium gas only.........no iffs or butts about it !

If this car will be your only vehicle, there will most likely be days when you aren't going anywhere. How about an S2000 and a cheap winter car?

Yes snow tires. The reason is twofold. You need winter compound rubber when it's just cold and the agressive tread for when there is snow coverage.
I have put mid grade gas im my car with no ill effects. I think 89 is as low as I have gone.
I went through a CT winter last season on the OEM Bridgestones. They are VERY greasy in the cold. A winter tire is highly recommended. On ALL wheels.

Thanks for the info everyone. How much of a hassle is it to have different size tires front and rear since that kind of screws up their rotation?

Hey frogman, welcome!

I drive mine in the winter but only when the roads are dry, mine's got the life O Riley, fair weather toy. So I have no issues with the tires but they are hard in the winter. I'm running the original equipment tires from 2006.

As to gas. I've been using 87 octane for a very long time, no problems, no issues and good gas mileage. The owners manaul says not to use under 86 and I don't think they even make 86 anymore. Havn't seen it around here anyway. There are plenty of old threads about the gas here but most people run premium I presume out of fear of damage but I swear to all, go for it, NO PROBLEMS.

Thanks everyone. I have a 1998 Tacoma 4x4 that is being recalled by Toyota because of a rusty frame, I was planning on using that as my winter savior. The only good thing is they are giving me a check for 150% of the Blue Book value in excellent condition. I plan on using that as a nice down payment on my S2K and pray for a mild winter!

Wow....good deal. Nice to see them stand by their product, even when it's 10 years old. I'd buy another one.

Thanks for the info again, Toyota makes a great product. I have 154K on the Tacoma with the original clutch, I've put very little money into it. Of course when I sold my 1993 Prelude V-TEC I had 157K with original clutch too and the engine still had lots of balls.
