I can't believe it happened, but I wrecked my 2003 S2K. Here's the link to some photos. I am so bummed about this. I hope it isn't written off as totalled, it took me a while to find a 2003 with all-red interior.

OUCH!!! Sorry to see that. What happened?
Can't tell the extent of the damage without better pics, but it doesn't look totalled to me... depends on your mileage and if they can repair your wheels and headlights without replacing them. I see one tail was popped out, is the other one still there?

Yeah, the other one's there. It only has 22,000 on it! (She really is my baby) I hope you're right. I have close to zero experience with damage like this so I have no clue what they'll estimate it at. I looked up kbb.com and for the mileage they put it at around $17,800 which is a hair lower than I was hoping for...

Well, be flexible, let the adjuster know you don't want her totalled. And be willing to to work with them on taking maybe used parts (if they let you source them), and doing things like getting the wheels resurfaced instead of replaced. Also, aftermarket is always cheaper than factory pretty much, so if they will let you, try to just get a check from them and do all the parts buying yourself.

I'm pretty die hard on the OEM thing. I'm thinking that if they count it as totalled (although I'm also getting a lot of feedback on s2ki.com and s2kca.com that it's probably repairable) then I'll see if I can keep the interior for a reduced reimbursement and just install it in my next S2K. It's mostly the hard-to-find all red interior that I'm afraid of losing...

I agree with SXY and work with your adjustor. A couple of weeks ago I did something stupid and bounced off a curb, ruined both wheels on the passenger side plus some very minor damage to the rear bumper. Like you, I wanted only OEM wheels, insurance adjustor said they could save $800 by using recon wheels. Plus adjustor assured me that if not 1000% satisfied they would get new ones. Just got the car back today, the wheels are OEM that were reconditioned. I did a very close inspection, can't tell that they are anything less than OEM brand new.

I had a reconditioned rear wheel installed after I bounced off a curb last winter. It looked really, really good - pretty much identical to the OEMs. However, when I got new tires installed a few months ago, the clear coat on the recon wheel was not really up to the task (lots of worn sections along the contact points). Now this could have been something the tire shop did, but the other 3 wheels look perfect, and this is a pretty good shop that I took it to. I really don't think it's a coincidence, but the damage is minor enough that I'm just going to live with it.
Also, since I believe that 08 & 09s are the only years with these stupid, painted wheels, previous years shouldn't have any problem with their wheel's "clear coat". |
