With a $25,000 dollar ceiling...I think the only two serious choices you'd have is the Miata and GTI. The Mustang GT starts around 27 I think, and the V6 Camaro should hardly be considered a sports car. I think the base WRX just makes it under 25, if that floats your boat.
Oh, and the Civic Si is not a bad choice either! |

I'd say a (gulp) solstice or sky. $25k isn't much for a BRAND new car.

Ahhh...I just realized the perfect answer to that question. The Mini Cooper S!
That's probably the most hard-core sports car mentioned so far...but you couldn't go wrong with any of these. I'm still a bit weary of Hyundai...the Genesis is definitely a good-looking car, but I don't trust the long-term quality yet. |

I was actually the first person in Omaha to try out a new Genesis Coupe which was a freaking awesome feeling
Personally I think I'd go for either the 4 pot turbo Genesis Coupe or a Mini S. Wife drove one of those two and my god, that thing corners like a mad man, not as fun as our stewies but still fun in its on mini way. |

New? There isn't a 'sports car' that $25,000 could afford that I would want.
Used? Mini S.

I checked into a Solstice when I was out looking at S's. The top is a pain to put down and when it was down, the trunk wasn't wide enough to put a 12 pack of Becks. I wasn't going to drink beer out of cans (and that's all that would fit), so I got an S.

People have posted that they have purchased a new S2000 for close to that amount that you have, if you got the cash this is the time of year to purchase a convertible.

There are some good used cars in that range
(corvette, RX8, S2000, 350Z) but you did say brand new so I would say either a Miata, MazdaSpeed 3 or a VW GTI depening if you want power or refinement. Not really sports cars though except for the Miata.

I went to test drive the new GTI last week. It was just ok. It looks nice in the picture, but it isn't that fast. I dont feel it worth $25K. Sales person told me "No discount" for now.

Yeah I was never too impressed with the GTI either. I'm sure it's nice solid car, but it's pretty heavy, and the performance really isn't what VW makes it out to be.
Now fellas, remember...the original poster said NEW cars under $25K, so you can leave out the Caterhams, Z06s, and BMWs

2010 R20 VW
2010 R20 VW EDIT: DAYUM! THESE FOOLS WANT 30G'S FOR THIS! WTF mang! Maybe with a rebate then
http://www.autotropolis.com/auto-ind...hot-hatch.html Looks good to. It is a kickass car not an S true but... Six Becomes Four—Plus a Turbo Meet the new R-series Golf. It will feature basically the same direct-injection 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that you find in the GTI, tuned to an impressive 270 hp. Power will be transmitted to all wheels. Zero-to-60 times should be in the low- to mid-fives, and while the regular GTI tops out at a drag-limited 149 miles per hour, the new R version will hit its governor at 155, with a theoretical top speed 10 miles per hour or so higher. Unlike the R32, the new R model will offer performance greater than the GTI’s, with the slightly increased weight and resistance of the AWD system easily offset by the leap in power and torque. We expect a choice of manual and dual-clutch transmissions, each with six forward ratios. Essentially, the Golf R features the Audi S3’s powertrain. We have driven that car extensively; think WRX performance combined with Audi refinement. It’s worth noting that the new Golf MkVI, upon which this R version will be based, is more sophisticated than the Audi A3/S3. The exterior of what we believe will be called R20 Turbo is distinguished from the GTI by an even more aggressive front spoiler, complete with three distinct air intakes, a more aggressive rear spoiler, and two center-exit exhaust pipes. Three doors will be standard, but VW will most likely also offer a five-door variation. Our artist’s renderings show a possible look for the three-door R20. It’s Coming Here! This ultimate Golf will go on sale in Germany in late 2009, and after some internal back and forth, VW has decided to offer the R model in America. VW will first show the R-series Golf on May 21 at the ADAC 24-hour race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Volkswagen will also launch an R version of the sporty, Golf-based Scirocco. Equipped with the same engine as the R20, it will be front-wheel-drive. Torque steer will be managed by an electronic differential VW calls XDS—and a prayer. So far, no Scirocco is slated for a U.S. launch. But the Golf R is, and we couldn’t be more excited.

Well, the Mustang and Camaro are certainly cool cars, but they don't fit the classic definition of a sportscar. If you are a bit of a sportscar purist, the only one of the cars mentioned that would fit the bill is the Miata. http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/2-11-2006-88657.asp for some amusing reading on the definition of the term sports car. So the OP asks, "what would u get?" Me, I'd get the Miata because of its handling characteristics and because it fits my own personal definition of a sports car. Just boatloads of fun to autocross too. Not dissin' the other two cars mentioned, I would just prefer the Miata.

Guys guys guys! Please let's refrain from saying things we might regret saying later on, like (shudder) o...o...owning a Miata? See? I have trouble even mentioning that p...p...possibility! Miata owners are the sworn enemy's of S 2000 owners everywhere I thought, or have I been misguided in my stomping of their fragile egos into a fine grit kind of loser paste with my mighty steed at every single possibility given to me? Am I wrong on this? I can only take on so many of those cars next to mine at the light revving in a sort of taunt for a good run. I just thought Miata owners liked losing, badly, often, and in numbers!

Nope. Several S owners around here have dedicated track Miatas (and would probably be more than capable of lapping you in your S).

OK, I gotta hand it to Mazda for allowing us to rediscover the essence of the soft top No Frills uniquely Japanese very modern take on the classic RWD Roadster like found in the Miata! If the Miata had not been made or not successful in unit sales the S2000 might never have been a reality. The Miata broke the just awful trend of supposed Sports Cars to gradually bloat into GT's and then gain more and more weight and luxury automatic gadgets like electric seat warmers or automatic headlight dimmers so at odds with the spartan "a radio if you must" idea of the Roadster package. Pure unadulterated motoring, shifting freely and feeling the motor rev. as opposed to commuting or just plain everyday driving.
Sure, just flair those fenders a bit, Extra wide meats all around, a supercharger to get the blood moving perhaps? The Miata was a revelation and a chance to relive the essence of the Roadster with a modern twist!

Not Miata, the other Mazda...the RX8. I had one for a while. All the proper ingredients in place. Rear wheel drive, 6 spd, nice suspension tuning, a back seat when you need to take more than 2 people, 9k rpm redline, LSD. It'll give a S a run for it's money.
