The iPad is not a laptop replacement. It's a tween.

It can't do close to what a macbook can do (I've owned an iBook, a Macbook, and a new Mabcook Pro). It's basically a big iPod touch with a lot of tweaks. I think it's an awesome idea, will wait for the 2nd generation before I decide if I want to buy one though. I have a brother that works at Google, I'm eager to hear what he has to say once he gets his hands on one.

I wonder why Apple stock went down when the iPad was released.

netbooks cost the same or less than that piece of crap and do EVERYTHING you could ask besides hardcore gaming.
no thanks, i'd rather have a smaller android based option (like the dell slate) that has an SD slot and can make calls while still being small enough to easily carry around. |

Im not saying that there are NO good PC's or hating one someone that owns a PC. I agree macs are over priced, but I have yet to know someone that has owned one and chooses to go back to PC thats all. There may be some out there but I have never heard that from anyone

I'm willing to pay the premium price for the mac problem free OS/customer service/innovation/styling/ease of use. I can run Windows 7 and Snow Leopard simultaneously while running hardcore 3D engineering programs (Catia, Pro/Engineer, etc.) while running all of my usual programs on the mac OS with absolutely zero problems. Last year I took in my ~3 year old macbook to see how much it would cost to replace the hard drive (was dropped several times during its lifetime and it was clearly evident on the case). They took it in and replaced the hard drive, replaced the keyboard and trackpad, and replaced the entire case... For free! AND they had it back to me in less than 45 min. Mind you the computer was ~2 years out of warranty (no Apple care). They have a customer for life. I'm in love with my macbook pro and I will never go back to using a PC for personal use.

No Flash (streaming) support...FAIL!
I am not impressed. I have 5 game machines, just as many laptops and various other devices and I feel no need or desire to add an iPad to my mix.

Risky Business
I wouldn't touch an iPad for the first year. A year from now they will have a cheaper, faster version with more memory. As other people said, it's not a laptop but a media center. There's a work around for watching Flash, but who wants screw with that?
All of my friends that are graphics guys love their Macs. But even they wouldn't get near that thing until they work out the bugs. Or should I say, the sucker consumers work out the bugs.

Everything that Microsoft releases sucks even more than its predecessor. My blood pressure rises whenever I'm forced to work on a PC. I know there are those who will disagree, but Windows is just not a well thought-out operating system....kinda like it's over-engineered or something.
For the iPad, I doubt I'll ever get one, but if I do, it'll be the 2nd generation model. It certainly won't provide MacBook performance (Apple can't have the pony outrun the horse, ya know?)....but the iPad is pretty much a laptop that doesn't open up. |

I think a lot people look at it and bash it based on what it cant do that a lap top can do... Its not meant to replace a laptop at all. Me personally use my desktop Imac for everything and dont own a laptop. Every once and a while ill be laying in bed watching tv and want to check some thing out online but too lazy to get up, the Ipad is a perfect thing for people that just want to use it for browsing and few other things.

The OP was sharing that he thought the new iPad is very cool... if it can do everything a Macbook can do. I have to agree with that statement. Yes, it *would* be very cool if it could do everything a Macbook (or laptop) can do. At present, it can't. At present, it is pretty much just a very interesting Kindle killer. What it will do in the future is merely speculation.
I prefer not to digress into zealot-like discussions of which is better, Mac or PC. Drive what you like. Use what suits your purposes. Person A's purposes are frequently different from Person B's purposes. Neither one is bad or good, right or wrong.

Clearly it will not be well suited as you would need the mass of a desktop replacement in order to effectively fracture someone's skull Try doing that with one of your dainty, little MAC-BOOKS you dirty HIPPIES!

The appropriate tool for what you are suggesting is a Dell XPS M2010 PC - desktop replacement. It even has a convenient handle by which you can hold it while swinging it through the air (assuming you can lift it that high; I don't have that kind of upper body strength). http://www.mobilewhack.com/images/de...ortable_pc.jpg http://img.ecplaza.com/my/linkzoltra.../2xpsm2010.jpg

Most viruses are written to take advantage of stupid people and you can't cure stupid.
Also, if Macs were as popular as PC's then they would get infected more often. As a software creator you write for the largest installed user base. So the finical incentive is not there for Mac based infections. I can say that at home I have never had a virus that as done any damage. In fact I very rarely have any issues of significant negative impact. Now, I do work in IT and have done so for the 12 years and I do have a total of 11 PC's based devices in my home. Also, I use SVS software virutalization so I can in fact, load software to a virtual layer and test it to see what effect it will have before malware or viruses infect one of my boxes. Mac's (not the power pc versions) are exactly the same as PC's in terms of hardware. It is all the same on the inside the main difference as we all know is the Nix based OS. Are they cool? Yes. Do I want one? Maybe/Maybe not. Would I take one so I can get Garage Band? Sure Here is the reason that the iPad does not support Flash at least from Steve Jobs, HTML5 will supplant Flash and Adobe is Lazy. That was paraphrased but it lays it out http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/...es-steve-jobs/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML5 http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/03/apple-shows-off/

i have 3 windows machines, 2 ubuntu machines, and a mac book pro. the wife uses the mac. it's a fun toy, but i don't use it seriously. i tried, but i just can't. don't get me wrong, i think OSX is the sex... it's very intuitive, flashy, pretty, and simple. i just like being able to tweak, adjust, edit, blah blah blah that can only be done on windows or linux.
i'm with T6, i build my rigs and they last a long time which is much longer than it takes me to want to build another one. as for viruses, yashooa nailed it. if you have a remote clue as to what you are doing, you can avoid viruses. they really are not a threat to the PC savy. Mac is to PC as the Z4 is to the S2000. both are great. one is a little flashier than the other with more end user "comfort." but the user cannot modify, work on, fix, maintain the machine as well as on the less flashy S2000. bmw designed it that way with all the plastic over the engine and all that crap that makes it look "nicer." |

netbooks, which are designed to do more computing, generally come with a single core 1.6 GHz processor. yeah, you can get them with more, but that's the standard (right now). i'm interested to see how the iTamp fares. it could do well. it won't do "iPhone" well, but it might do better than the Apple TV. |

Agreed! But now that I realized that it's an iPhone OS....screw that! I have way's to make that iPad for half the price using my leftover parts haha And I build rigs, just I don't do laptop's, cause I'm gonna go crazy on the specs lol So I was going to try out a Mac.. But I might just stick to the Mac Book Pro, or just build a new somethings.... But I would like to see the iPad with the Snow Leopard but with the iPhone interface, that would be nice! And maybe something like a 2ghz+ XD Then I would buy it for maybe $500 haha |
