Somebody Help Me!
I have been a VTEC guy for 22 years. I love Honda cars, Honda dependability, Honda engineering and Honda-driving people. Why do I need help? I am being seduced by the form of the Porsche Boxster. Dang, folks that is one beautiful form. I suspect there are a thousand reasons I need to buy the Stewie vs. the Boxster but when I look at the Boxster, I forget all of them. Could you all give me a few more reasons why I need to avoid the Finland/Stutgart Hun production vehicles?
Any solid logic is greatly appreciated! |

Aaay Tex, do you honestly think that via this forum, someone's gonna be able to cool that hot-blooded thing you got goin' on for a Boxter?
C'mon. I'd sooner stand between a hobo n' the butt of a stogie. You're obviously smitten n' there's but one solution to that problem . . . . that I know of anyway. Your wish to be loyal is commendable, but if you don't at least spend some time in a Boxter, you'll never know, will ya? Ya only gets one go-'roun' . . . . might'z well enjoy yourself. Be well, good luck n' keep us posted. Java

well all i gotta say is that if you could afford a boxter, go for it! otherwise, the s2000 is still a sweet ride! but don't get upset when a suped up s2k beats your $80k ride...

Well, all 911 owners will look down at you as a poor Porsche owner, while in the S2000 all the Civic owners will look up at you as rich Honda owner.
so Logically you're better off with the S2000. don't take me seriously anway I would stick with my S2000 anytime, it's more fun to drive.

The boxster is the butt of all performance jokes. Lol its a porsche and drives like a vw beetle and not even the turbo model. This is coming from what ive read and seen the only one ive ever driven was a 944 and that was about the biggest piece of junk I have ever seen. If youre basing your love for the car on looks alone then thats your descision.
Here is why I am not a fan. As the driver says "look at my interior"

My friend Russ has a 2004 Boxter S and has had nothing but problems with it electrical mostly. I have driven his and was honestly not that impressed with the overall performance. It is more vague in the feel of its shift linkage and has a persistant understeer. It does sound sweet top up or down but ... to pay for so many options like he did and walk away almost $60,000 grand poorer. No thanks I will take the S any day of the week. or maybe I will take 2 of them

Very Helpful: Thanks Everyone! One more Q
Thanks everyone for helping me overcome the emotional focus.
I am committed to the S2K. I will be using it for a daily driver and although I expect it to be a bit more frustrating than my Accord, the curves will more than make up for the interstate doldrums. One other question. Is the break-in period for the S2K critical? I ask because I see lots of 5-7K mileage cars out there bought by folks who see the car as "pretty" but don't really "get it". How likely are those folks to do damage to the car by not breaking it in appropriately? I know it's a Honda but the Stewie is a bit different from the other Hondas due to the racing heritage and thus the rationale for the question. Ya'll know. I don't. Any thoughts? I will be glad to pony up the $34K but I would like the option of the $28k for a 5k mileage car. Thank you all again for helping the clueless |

Thanks Java,
You and the folks at S2K have more power than you thought. My head was always committed to the Stewie it was my eye that was drawn to the Boxster. I posted another question but I would like your senior member assessment. Is the break-in period critical for the S2K? I ask because I would like to buy a 5k mileage car for $28k vs. a new one for $34k. Any thoughts? Again, thank your for your reply and your wit. It's folks like you that make this site go. |

not clueless at all good question. No real answer. This is coming from engine builders that I have talked to. Some recomend you put the motor in and beat the snot out of it if it breaks it was going to anyways. Others say take it easy on it for so and so miles. Some say idle for 2 hours then rev it at 2k for 45 mins then bump it to 3000 and so on. Then drive it park it for a day then drive harder and ya. Ive heard a million different way to break it in. Whats the best depends on who you talk to.

If you like the Boxster, buy it. I have given thought to trading in the S for a Cayman, but I like not having any payments.

Used vehicles r' all the same: "ya picks up yer hand ya plays yer cards n' ya takes yer chances" Like anything else, you go over it with as fine-toothed a comb as you can. If you have to, take it to a reputable mechanic for an eval. The one thing that you've got goin' for you is that it's a Honda. Yeah, I'm aware'a all the hype n' the sunshine we Stewie owners blow up each other's butts . . . it's still a @*#&in' Honda. While it may not be actually "bullet-proof", it's damned-near. So, unless you're lookin' at somethin' very obviously abused, I think a low-mileage Stewie might be a very rewarding n' efficient purchase. But, like anythin' else, there're always exceptions. What you goddadoo is everything in your power to see that you avoid one of those exceptions. You're in the catbird-seat right now. Purchase one of the exceptions and as soon as the money exchanges hands, it's problems become your problems. Good luck, be well n' like the ol' knight said . . . . . Java |
