Okay, it's not a radio or a phonograph......but it'll make music.
Big old monster......1870's.. Brazillian Rosewood. Plays pretty well.

Took lessons as a kid, and was a bad student.......but I do appreciate nice furniture. Got lots of really old stuff. This particular piece has lived most of it's life where it is right now.

LoL. $500 er yeah. Do you deliver? I'm no expert but if it is in the apparent condition I'm guessing it could go for thousands.

Yeah Phil, I'll throw it in Stewie's trunk.....$75.00 extra for delivery.......where 'r ya at? If you're buyin' today, I'll throw in a songbook or two.....
(weighs appx 1200 lbs.)

You have an impressive collection of historic record players.......really incredible, Sir.

What makes them so appealing (to this lad, anyway) is the quality cabinetry of these items.
I prefer old furniture. Asthetically, and from a sheer durability standpoint. With minimal care, it can last hundreds of years.

Excellent pics Phil,

That's why the prices keep going up. Labor was cheaper than material. The history of the recording industry is quite interesting. It started with the original of that brass replica. Edison drew a picture and told his shop foreman to make
it. They wrapped tin foil around the drum, which had grooves machined in. It was hand cranked with a stylus making dents in the foil. Then it was rewound and played back with the other side. To Edison's surprise it worked the first time.

As promised, our intrepid, undeterrable, undetectable, stealthy n' genuinely han'some undercover cameraman has returned with the goods.

Might help if you put a white hanky in front of the flash to difuse the light a bit. more layers more diffusion.

The pictures are nice. I was referring to the light kickback from the Sonora.

Craftsmanship aint dead. You just have to pay more. Here's a picture I took at the Rose Bowl Flea Mkt. of an Orchestrion. Notice the drums below.

Java - That RCA is really in good condition! It's nice to see something that's not coated with that real dark varnish that was popular back then. I've got a '33 Majestic that is so dark you can hardly see the grain of the wood. Your picture may give me the motivation to strip it (I've been putting it off for 20 years).

Phil - Any idea how old that piano is? She's a beauty.

Oh, 'meant to tell you: the plan to pan quickly past the 'phone flickz went as planned. Only it wuz coffee he spilled all over hisself in a panic ta get me ta "GO BACK! GO BACK!"
Needless ta say, he wuz ooohin' n' aaahin' ta beat the band.
N' the last 'phone'a Phil'z wuz pronounced African Mahogany'z best'ee could tell. 'Grain'z right, jus' wuzzn't ready fer all'att red.
But bottom line is that those are some beautiful piecez Phil. I even godda second opinion.

Don: like everything (Sorry. I wuz cleanin' it n' the g key accidentally went off) else, the RCA wuz redone. In some cases it wuz jus' a serious clean-up, in otherz it required disassembly, removal, reproduction n' replacement'a damaged n' unsalvageable parts.
I've seen the "before n' afterz" of a few'uv the pieces n' how he (Richie) can make dried, peeled n' split veneer look original again, I've no idea. I'm sure if I asked, he'd explain it ta me, but I'd likely fergit anyway.

N' I jus' wanna post this again in case any'a you guyz missed it:
http://techpreservation.dyndns.org/schematics

Jagg, izz'ere a name fer that particular type'a py-anna?
(Don, great thread. Unbelievable good stuff in'iss'un.)

Believe it or not that's new. They still make them, mostly for bars and such. If you look closely there is a coin slot in the upper corner and 4 rolls below between the drums.

If you ever get to So Cal there is a place called San Sylmar that will knock your sox or whatever off. Google the website. Might be under Merle Norman cosmetics in Sylmar. It's an amazing site.

Grain'z right, jus' wuzzn't ready fer all'att red.

The case was refinished with mahogany, which is red. A lot of people use walnut stain to make them darker. The flash brings out the color more. The table is cherry wood. I rubbed some mahogany in to match the phono.

That's something my wife did eons ago. When I'd go on business trips, she'd sip a little wine, put on Greek music and slap a little paint on canvas. It was her painting phase.

More recently she did a good job,on the wall, of faux painting.
