Wasn't that the ultimate result of Enzo reneggin' on his deal to sell Ferrari to Ford?
Ford wanted some serious Le Mans machinery (the Cobras were kickin' butt in their division n' beyond, but they weren't the top dogs n' the Ford suits wanted their blue oval on the fastest stuff out there) n' when Enzo flip-flopped on the deal, Ford said " Ya know whut?" n' went to considerable lengths to make ol' Enzo eat that decision.

N' before you get started, yes. The Maverick is related.

Here's todays version of that car. It's on my Christmas list. Being a Chevy guy, I never thought I'd say that about a Ford. I do have a soft spot for the Falcons, Mavericks and Pintos of yesteryear, but who doesn't? They're like ugly puppies, you just can't hate 'em.
BTW, I keep all of my Ford pics in a separate folder so they don't touch any of my other stuff. Can't be too careful these days, gotta use cootie control.

I don't know if any of you guys have seen the GT up close, it's just amazing........I can't rationalize the money it takes to get your hands on one though.

This one's fits the budget a little better, and certainly my taste.

okay, elder statesman and chevy lovers......

How about Mr. Shelby running the Giant's Despair Hillclimb in 1956 with a '52 4.5 litre Ferrarri 375 Formula Car. (one of four produced for the Indy 500 in 1952) He won the hillclimb with this unit in '56.
Photo is taken about 30 miles from where I live.
A little before my time, but ya just gotta love it.

Have a friend who owns one. Nice car (if you like Fords )...same color as that one, same stripes, probably same cost of ownership.

Izzatt from your library 'r izzitt somethin' local? Majorly sweet. @*#&in' huge, but makes me all warm-n'-fuzzy . . . although that could be mold growin' too.

Going back a few more years.........This was the local track where I grew up. Located on US 1 in Langhorne, PA. At one time it was dirt and I believe, at 1 mile in length, it was the largest and fastest dirt track in the country.

Eventually it got paved and they ran Indy cars, stock cars and pretty much anything that had wheels. They called it "the big left turn" because even though it was "D" shaped, it had a very short front straight so the actual running line was a big "O".

There was once an 1/8 mile dragstrip in the infield, and I remember, at 10 years old, I stood with my toes right on the edge of the track as the cars flew by. I was hooked for life.

I went to many races at that track and saw many famous drivers. Finally in the early 70's it got bulldozed to build a K-mart. I hate K-mart.

These programs are just a little older than I am. I've been looking for some from the late 50's thru early 70's when it closed.

damn if I didn't race my H-D 125 at Langhorne. Good track for motorcycles cause you just left the rear wheel about a foot higher than the front and stood on the gas...course you couldn't see much because of the flying mud but at that age, I didn't care.

Jagg - thanks for the flyer, I collect them. I've got a workshop with an office that I've been converting to a "lounge" for a place to hang out. The walls are getting covered with racing memorabilia. It'll be a good addition.
I thought that hillclimb was still going on. Did they move it or stop it?

I remember the bike races there when it was still dirt. My buddy and I used to try to sneak in and watch. Only made it once without getting caught. I remember thinking those guys were nuts. I don't think they raced bikes there once it was paved but I'm not sure.

Nope, never raced there again once they paved the track...falling down in dirt is one thing, falling on asphalt is something else entirely. Most fun you could have with your clothes and the lights on (of course it took a 30 minute shower to get all the dirt/mud/oil out of your clothes and hair).

Hi Don,

Hillclimb still goes on, but the roadrace they used to run with it was taken off the schedule, way back when.......all the drivers got together and petitioned the scca to take it off the schedule, as it was too dangerous. They had a couple fatalities back to back, and that was it.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Art Arfons died last week. He was 81. For those of you that may not have heard of him, he held the land speed record 4 or 5 times back in the 60's with a car called the Green Monster.

Here's a slightly newer shot of Art and the Green Monster............

and he was a sports car guy............

Damn! Ain't a good month for elderly auto icons.
I remember when they were doing all the write-ups on the Monster n' Arfons. 'Can't say's I remember all the content, but I do remember, at the time bein' duly impressed with the engine. Too much water under the bridge, but I wanna say it was a J-79, but that seems unlikely. If I'm not mistaken he wound up picking up a wrongly categoried fighter engine for the Monster for a song. But then, I might be mixin' up Breedlove's engine.
'Been awhile n' I'm too @*#&in' stubborn n' computerly inept to look it up.
Yeah. Thanks Art. Ya made life interesting.
'Wonder if the big G's gonna ask for his autograph?
Oh yeah . . us older fellas know, but for the young'uns: the nose wing actually changed pitch dependin' on the pressure on the front tires. The tires (n' the front end) started gettin' light n' the wing would increase downforce.
Don, that's a great shot. Your library?
