Speaking of Dan Gurney!
Thought this press release might be of interest to the old folks.
Dan Gurney has been named Grand Marshal of the upcoming Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. He will be honored at a Rolex Dinner Friday night prior to the event. On Saturday he will wave off the field which includes his son Alex, the 2007 ROLEX DAYTONA PROTOTYPE Champion. Alex will be joined on the Gainsco Team by co-champion and last year's team mate Jon Fogarty, NASCAR champion Jimmy Johnson and CART Champion Jimmy Vasser. The team is looking for its first win at the endurance classic. The Gurney name is part of the history of the Daytona sports car event, Dan won the very first one in 1962 as a driver and again as a car builder and team owner in 1993, when PJ Jones, Rocky Moran and Andy Wallace put the Eagle GTP car into the winner's circle, their lap record remains unbroken to this day. In addition, to the network coverage, the first 90 minutes of the 24 Hour Race can be seen on the 1,400-square foot News Astrovision Screen located in Times Square in New York. SPEED’s broadcast of the race will encompass Saturday, January 26 and Sunday, January 27, totaling 15.5 hours of coverage: FOX LIVE! – Part I Jan 26 1:00 PM ET – 2:30 PM ET SPEED LIVE! – Part II & III Jan 26 2:30 PM ET – 10:00 PM ET SPEED LIVE! – Part IV Jan 27 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many publications here and abroad for remembering in words and pictures the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Le Mans and 1967 Spa Grand Prix victory last year . It is gratifying to see the interest so many fans have shown in John Zimmermann's book (published by David Bull): "Dan Gurney's Eagles, the technical history of the machines designed and built by All American Racers", the first edition is close to being sold out. Since AAR left motorsports as a campaigner and race car manufacturer, the company has gradually branched out into different fields of endeavour. Putting its racing technology to good use, it has gradually enlarged and diversified its prototyping and manufacturing facilities and increased its workforce and by now has become very successful in the aviation industry. At the same time new Alligator motorcycles equipped with S & S V-twin engines are under development and will probably be introduced to the market later this year. We wish all our supporters and fans a healthy and prosperous 2008! More smiles per mile! All American Racers, Inc. Well, since the temperature was below zero, I spent the day watching the Barrett-Jackson auction. I guess it's common knowledge that some people have more money than brains and during the 10 hour broadcast I came to realize that if a person is foolish enough to spend waaaaay too much for something, I'm glad it's a car.
As usual, many cars sold in the $100,000 to $500,000 range and some went over a million. American muscle cars prevailed with big block Chevys, Hemi-anythings and Shelbys/Cobras. Hundreds and hundreds of cars that were either perfect, interesting, beautiful, cool or all of the above. I'd really like to get a closer look at cars of this caliber and I'm adding a trip to Scottsdale to my bucket list. Funny thing though, at the end of it all I thought back about all of the cars and wondered, if there's a chance that I could own just one, which one would it be? The answer surprised me. A red 1969 Boss 429 Mustang. I think it went for $325,000. Who-da-thunk. ![]()

Barrett-Jackson is the best tv show ever. Even if it wasn't colder than my wife's heart outside, I'd still be watching the auction.
Anybody catch the "Leggenda e Passione" Ferrari auction that they were broadcasting yesterday? Italianos galore!!! beautiful vintage stuff. Way prettier than what comes outta Modena nowadays...... jagg |

I saw part of that show. There was one car that sold for $10,000 new, back in around 1961 and it went for $2,600,000. That made me dizzy so I shut it off.

I think it was last year that Harley Earl's Oldsmobile went for around 3 Million.

Long, long ago, before the invention of dirt and cable TV, TV stations did not broadcast all night. They "signed off" around midnight by playing the national anthem and showing a flag waving in the breeze. Then you got a test pattern until about 6 a.m.
I know the next question........What's a test pattern? It's a bunch of lines and circles that look like something sorta "pop art". Anybody got a picture?

Nice one Phil! My theory is that the test patterns of the fifties had psychological effects on the youngsters and were the prime cause of the "chemical age" of the sixties. Psychedelic, man.........

We had one of the first tv's on the block. A giant 7" b&w, I think it was1948. There were two channels. I was so enthralled I would sit and watch the test pattern. Even took pictures of it. guess I didn't get out much.

We often stood and saluted the flag during the national anthem prior to the test pattern. I wasn't around in '48 Phil, but I grew up with three channels so I can relate. My Dad was in the TV business so we had the first color set on the block..seems like it was '61 or '62.

My family had the first TV and the first color TV on our street. When we got our first TV there was only the Dumont TV network. Broadcast from NJ. Then the CBS Red and Blue networks split and the Blue net became ABC (if I remember correctly) and then we had 2 networks...
The test pattern is just that. It's used to align the linearity of the TV cameras. I spent a number of years (as a sideline) doing broadcast stuff...worked for a few of those alphabet agencies and companies).

I remember:
Gas rationing stamps on the windshield of my Dad's car. Paper and tin can drives. Put on the curb for pickup to help the war effort. WW11 that is. No new cars. all the plants were making military equipment. War bond drives. Blackout shades at the beach. we spent a week at the beach each summer. The houses had to have blackout shades drawn at sundown. Lights from the shore would sillowette(sp) the merchant ships moving along the Carolina coast. The German U boats would use the lights to show the ships so they could target them. Bubble gum was scarce.. That was one of the things i loved and had to ride my bike all over town trying to get some store clerk to bootleg some for me. Air raids. Looks like I focused a lot on the war efforts. There were fun times too. Listening to the Lone Ranger, Green Hornet, jack Armstrong, and The Shadow on the radio. Those were the good old days.

Damn! You guys are older than I thought. How about putting the yellow food coloring in the Nuco (fake butter) because the dairy lobby got a law passed that wouldn't allow it to be sold yellow?
