Didn't know Don was a role model for our generation.
And it is so true!

Like most folks, I've been bitchin about the price of gas on a daily basis. Started thinking about how cheap gas was when I was a kid. I know I wasn't making much money back then but it sure seemed to go further.
In 1965, the minimum wage was $1.25/hr. That $1.25 could get you 5 gallons of gas. Now the minimum wage is $6.55 and that won't even get you 2 gallons of gas. Ok, some folks think the minimum wage is way behind the cost of living. They're probably right, so I looked up the Consumer Price Index changes from 1965 thru 2008. Turns out that $1.25 back in 1965 is the same as $8.73 today and that $8.73 will buy you about 2.3 gallons of gas. Still not even 1/2 of the 5 gallons you could get back in the 60's. I just wanted to be sure that my bitchin, swearin and cursin at the oil companies was justified. It is.

Ran across this. I'm sure some of you will have a favorite here. I was involved with quite a few them in my earlier record days.

Ya'll when we grew up we lived in the country, we drew our water from the well with a windlass and bucket. We didn't have a house with indoor plumbing until 1966. We had the deluxe model outhouse it was 2 holer that was good since my twin brother and I were deathly afraid of going to it after dark. We killed hogs in the fall and planted a garden every spring. You know I wonder if life wasn't better back then, it definately was a lot simpler. WE didn't have a telephone until around 1968 and it was a "party line" how many of ya'll remember those.

A two-holer sailor?
We're talkin' Sears Best, Heavy-Duty Affluence here brother. 'Afraid that the pampered wussification'a Java started out early in life. The "bahk-ouse" (As all good Italian family out-houses were referred to), had been replaced by indoor for some time by the time I made my presence known. But the party-lines were still here'n there'n alwayz a solid source'a gettin' a whuppin'. The price'a bein' reared in'a "Big-City" I guess.

Yeah living in rural georgia back in the late 50's and early 60's was like living in a third world country. Everybody was poor but none of us knew it because we were all in the same the boat. My graduating class in high was 32 kids. By the way we had the sears & roebuck catalog in the "backhouse" for readin and "other" uses if you get my drift. That sucker was as thick as a new york phone book.

Well, my reference to "Sears Best, Heavy-Duty" came from alodda years'a perusin' that catalog fer jus' about anything we needed.
Though, we purchased our bathroom paper-goodz from the A&P, like most other city-folk. Our Sears catalogz didn't necessarily make it from cradle'da-grave with all pages intact, but if there were pages missin', it wuzz'nt fer bahk-ouse service.

Not an old fart here. Yet, have had the experience of using many an outhouse, and knowledgeable of the workings of the party line.........no elephants or donkeys inferred. (just grew up in the sticks.)

I remember putting gas in my 1964 Ford Comet at 19 cents a gallon for leaded gas. imperial gallon at that. Now Canada has gone metric and we buy it by the litre. I am scared to calculate the difference to today's price!
Funny we worried about burning off the belted tires because they were as much as $25.00 each to replace. (installed)! 1 imperial gallon = 1.21 US gallons 1 US gallon = 3.79 litres.

Using the change in the Consumer Price Index between 1965 and today, the current price of gasoline should be $1.75 per gallon (US).
