Road Hazards

Whut kin I tell'yuz? I'm in a threaderish mood taday.
But, a friend related a story about a flat chunk'a snow/ice frizbeein' off'a the top'uv'a rig n' thankfully only comin' down on izz hood (Scratched it I'm sad ta say) but when you consider the mahem that a what? 40 lb. flat, spinnin' chunk'a snow/ice could do comin' down on your top? 'Not a pleasant thought.
Anyway, different areas n' timez'a the year present us all with different hazards, that we might jus' take'z everyday life, but could possibly make a major difference in the life'a somebody unaccustomed ta the raggtoppin' way'a things.
Not ta turn it inta an encounter-group, but it wouldn't do any harm for us ta share the learnin' experience, y'know?
I'll respectfully steal my buddy'z thunder n' offer up the snow/ice off'a the top'uv'a rig as exhibit A.
N' jus' because you ain't got snow in your area, it don't mean that the rig'z local, if ya get my drift. 'Could be haulin' from a snowy area n' your warmer temps're loosenin' the big white hobo on'izz pulltop.
N' in the wordz'a that blue-suited mother-hen, Sergeant Esterhauz: "Let's be careful out there."

Good point. Hey I liked Hill Street Blues too. It's too bad they don't write them like that anymore.

Its a know factor living in Ontario, we do get bad Winters, and they always seem to last too long. Freezing rain is the worst. Completely covers your vehicle as if it had a run in with a thousand honey jars...................what happens is that when the tempriture fluctuates we get a seperation between the ice build up and the vehicles body. Known to be very dangerous is to follow big rigs with trailers at these times. I have seen ice coming of the tops of trailers in motion like sheets of plywood come flying off onto trailing traffic.
God help if I was in my stewie...........thats why she's locked up until Spring..................

someone say Spring.......where...where

Neil, I just noticed you live in London. I used to live in Kitchener-Waterloo and have friends in Guelph, Hamilton, Muskoka Lakes, Toronto and Ottawa. Welcome to the sunny South...

morphin' back to hazards:

right after i got my car in the fall, the leaves were fallin', and the acorns were droppin', and top down was i, as is my wont, when lo and behold, whap! a large fruit of the oak hit the windscreen in front of my face. sounded quite like a pistol shot and scared me just about as much. and i realized that had it hit me in the face...but i digress.

i have seen ice blow off of cars and trucks but we don't have much of that. it is a very real hazard.

i have punctured two gas tanks with metal debris on the freeways in the large metropolis to the north. once in my employers car, and once in my volvo. the tank was full in the volvo and i watched the needle drop steadily. i couldn't stop as i was less worried about catching fire as i was about where i was. after i stopped, gas was still leaking out, and i had to call the fire department. i wanted to drop a match but i thought better of it. both incidents were years ago. i would never own another volvo

bb, yer mention'a leaves made me think'a my usual fall sermon.
Jus' when everybody'z use'ta goin' out n' carvin' their favorite corners all summer long, on warm, clear pavement, with warm, sticky tires, fall comes along with all those colorful reasons fer us ta go out n' gawk n' bond with nature . . . . in'a kind'a quickerish manner a'course.
As pretty'z they are, rapidly comin' up on a familiar corner where fallen leaves have taken up residence can ge'cha alot more up-close-n'-personal with flora n' fauna than you'd intended. N' dependin' on which of your four balanced ('least they were when you entered the turn) traction-points winds up losin' it's bite, each resultin' Whoa *@&#! will have diff'rent results.
Be well,
Java

slippin' and slidin' deer

yep, i have slud on the wet leafs before. an un-nervin' feelin'.

now to hit a deer, which i have done twice, and have the oppurtunity to do often, is downright scary. they are often grazing on the side of the road. i smashed the front of a truck against a doe at 65mph. was not pretty. i hit the other at about 10mph. i had 6/10ths of a mile to drive, one driveway to another, pitch black, no moon, all lit up, and traveling slow so i wouldn't hit a deer. the 10mph deer was knocked down, but regained his/her hooves and ran alongside the road until he/she could find an opening in the pine forest, and bolted through it. no damage to the car, but the scent of the deer was on the front plastic (can't really call it a bumper) for a few days until i washed it off. a very musky smell, if you know what i mean.
