I like Shell and Chevron. I used to pump Chevron, but on s2000, I like Shell better. Do you guys have any preference and why?
I am always skeptical about this issue. If it really does make difference or my head is making me think that way, because certain company advertise in certain ways. thanks ![]()

I've tried for Chevron Techron for the last couple of years, after I skimped and went for cheap gas a few times and sputtered on idle - it may not have been related but I've found it never happens with this gas. Nothing against Shell, just not a lot of them convenient for me so I don't know.

I would run shell... but the shell by my house only is 91 octane. The BP(I actually like it) is 92 octane for the same price.

Interesting question. I usually use what ever is closest when the light comes on. Never thought about it really, just figured all the name brands were pretty much the same.

Dirty little secret of the petroleum business: Except for additives, they are not only equal, they are the same thing.
All the players even share the same pipelines. |

swingle's right the gas is all the same. Some of the independents have older tanks and you might get dirt or water in it.

So are you saying that the Shell and Chevron gas has the same quality grade as the cheaper Race Trac, 7/11, Wal-Mart or Kroger (grocery store) gas??

That begs the question, does on brand have better additives than another?

I tend to be skeptical. I know of no study that indicates that it improves mileage, or longevity of your car, or really, that it does anything. I'm all ears; if anyone knows of such a study, I'd like to see it. (My buddy couldn't produce one!!) CT makes a good point though. I'm always weary of small, low-volume mom-n-pop filling stations. The gas is what it is. But you have to watch out for impurities, which are more likely to be found in gas distributed by the independant players. |

"Name-brand" gas is pretty much nonexistent around here. In fact, there are only two stations in town that even offer premium, and when they run out of it, we can expect to wait several months for a new truckload to come in. I have to admit that I'm guilty of putting in 89 octane ethanol when premium isn't available (and as you may have guessed, around here that tends to be quite often), and while it hasn't produced any inconsistencies in the way the car runs yet, I worry that it eventually will.

Shell V-Power is the only thing I put in my cars. I always go to the same gas station.

Hammerhead.....I've traveled most of the USA and have not seen a place that didn't have name brand gas. Hope ya don't mind me asking, but where do ya live? As for the 89 octane, I have an Acura TL that Mother says needs 91 or better. I know an Acura is not quite the same as Stewie, but I have almost 60,000 miles on her and she runs just fine and have never put even one drop of high test into that tank. I know this is anecdotal information, but you probably will be ok.

Pablo,
I to have an 04 TL and my wife use to put 89 in it becuase some people told her that at higher altitude there is no differance between 89 and 91. I started putting 91 in it for her and pretty soon she started to tell me she like when i filled her car up becuase it felt more peppy. I told her it was becuase i put 91 in instead of the 89. Now all she puts in it is 91. If i where you i would try it and after the third fill up (if you can afford the price of the 91 out where you live. It is $3.34 out where I am) take it out on an open road and get in to it then when you get back into town you will noticed that it eninge is deffently more livly. Ours is also a 6speed. Also like I said I only use Shell V-Power in our cars.

Hey 67AD
Thanks for the info on the TL fuel situation. I'm sure you are right about the pickup improvement. I was mostly concerned about knocking or other ill effects of using the lower octane fuel. I haven't noticed any. The Acura is actually my wife's car. She probably would not notice the improved pick up....

I've got a 2002 CL type S the Acuras automatically change the timing to agree with the gas that you are using. To get the best performance and gas mileage use the higher octane like they recommend but the 87 or 89 should hurt it the way it would have in the older cars( knocking and pre-detenation?)
