Silly injuries

Well in the last month I have injured myself twice and both were stupid injuries. So this got me thinking maybe I should start a thread so we can share our experiences so I wont feel as silly.

Well last month I woke up went to work everything was great. I am standing there like I usually do ha and I get a horrible pain in my stomach that doubles me over. Next thing I know I wake up with 20 guys standing around me a horrible buzzing in my ears and I cant answer their questions. So finally my brain starts to function and I realize I passed out. So they get the ambulance because I was out for 5 minutes turns out it was a nerve in my stomach that caused me to pass out and when I fell I cracked my head open on the floor. Brain injury may explain my temper lately.

Second injury happened on wednesday. I lifted a 250 pound engine block it was a 3.5 isuzu block with cranks rods pistons and oil pan. I took 2 steps and stepped on something lost my balance and you guessed it right on the ankle. For your viewing pleasure I took a picture 4 days later and this is what it looks like heh.

I look forward to hearing your stories.

Hope you had a thorough exam. Sounds like a venous vegal reaction, which is not serious. But with some of the other symptoms, buzzing in ears, unable to respond, it might be something more. If you haven't done so, tell your doctor of your experience.

About 35 years ago, a friend had a heart attack. I was driving on the freeway when I got chest pains and felt faint. Pulled to the right hand median. The next thing I knew I was waking up and the motor was still running. Thought I had a coronary.

Turns out it was late in the day, my blood sugar was low and I'd done some heavy lifting that day, hence the chest pains. It was a vegas nerve reaction. Felt much better after it was diagnosed.

Your loss of balance might be connected.

Or not, but get it checked out.

I have a vagus nerve experience at the doc's - doing a breathing test, breath aaaaaalllllll the way out... bang, woke up on my back, the nurse was good at keeping me from hitting anything with my head on the way down. That little nerve is really potent when it kicks in...

when i was young, i was riding my bike down the sidewalk and the neighbor and his daughter were kickin a soccer ball in their front yard. As i passed the yard, the ball skidded right in front of my tire and hit. I took a trip over the handle bars and had a few scrapes. His daughter started crying and ran into the house while her dad ran over to me freightened that i was hurt badly. I was ok though. What's kinda funny is that even til this day, ill drive the S past his house and if he's out there he'll give a freindly wave. His daughter also got hot.

Went to see Pink Floyd. During intermission, my buddy and I went to get a beer. Standing in line, I began to feel very woozy. Mind you, nothing out of the ordinary or even unexpected; this WAS a Pink Floyd concert... and those were my rock-n-roll days. Nuff said?? Anyway, I passed out. With the help of my buddy and several others in line, I got back up to my feet and counted my blessings that I wasn't hurt.

This is where the story gets dicey. When we were almost to the front of the line (that's right... I STILL wanted the beer), things started to get fuzzy again. The next time I woke up, I tried to tell everyone that I was ok, but couldn't, having broke my jaw in three places.

5 weeks later, I was able to eat solid foods again, but not until I'd missed Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner.

Moral of the story? Turns out everything is better in moderation!

In high school, I was standing in the hall. The bell rang and I thought I'd make a grand entrance and do a flying leap into the room. I clipped the top of my head on the doorway and landed on my ass with my legs out in front of me. Everyone was looking at me like "OH MY GOD!" I tilted my head forward and it was like there was a bowl of blood balanced on my head that was now pouring on the floor. The teacher grabbed a roll of paper towels and wrapped it around my head. It ended up looking like a 2 ft. tall paper turban. I was so embarrassed. Got 9 stitches out of the deal.

I'm glad you checked out o.k. Those symptoms could have indicated something much more serious, but at least you have peace of mind now. Did they check your blood sugar?

Back in January, I was playing with the cat with my foot. I was making like I was going to kick him and he was swatting back at me with his paw. He backed up to the corner of the couch. I leaned on the back of the cuch and continued when I suddenly threw my foot too far to the left and stubbed my pinky toe on the edge, resulting in a dislocation and snapped in half. Talk about feeling stupid...

What's even funnier is that I almost did the same exact thing on the same foot a few months later playing with him again.

Damn, Vez. That's a cloven hoof there. Has that extra reach helped you with your heel/toe work?

And the venous vegal thing is actually pretty common. One of my buddies at work had it happen in his bathroom. I understand that it happens most frequently after peeing, which apparently alters blood pressure and the balance of salts/sugars. Anyway, he was an ugly mess for a good while... having caught the sink and toilet with his face.

I spent the whole afternoon in the ER waiting to get it straightened out and popped back in. The worst part of it was that the 2 shots of lidocaine into the nerve in my little toe to numb it hurt more than the actual breaking of it. Burned like a bitch!

Does poison ivy count? We were clearing a fenceline and the guys were using a weedeater to clear the weeds. I got a little too close and got caught in the spray. Turned out the weeds were poison ivy. Not a pretty sight, my arm swelled up so badly I had to go to the emergency roon and get a shot. Had to throw out all the clothes plus a pair of boots. Nasty blisters all over for a couple weeks. Before that I never reacted to it much, now if it's in the same county I break out.

I must not be allergic to poison ivy. I've never had it and had spent plenty of time in the woods behind the house that I grew up in.

Couple from the youngin of the group. lol

Happened to me twice. Where I didnt eat for like 24 hours (just being a dumb kid). First time my dad was getting on to me cause I was introuble for breaking something around the house. Right as he told me "Your going to pay for this" I passed out. (Worked well enough I didnt have to pay for it lol)

Second time was in a Sams parking lot where I just passed out.

3rd story I was helping out building a shed on this new land we bought to build a house and got attacked by chiggars. I ended up looking like I had the chicken pox all over again wasnt fun.

I had poison oak REAL bad on my arm. It wouldn't stop oozing. I tried layers and layers of tissue with little luck. Then I thought "Hmmm, tampons are very absorbent." So I bandaged one of my girlfriend's tampons (new, not used) on my forearm. I covered it real good...except for one thing. The girl in class next to me asked "Is that a tampon on your arm?" I said "How'd you know?" She pointed to the string hanging out from the bandage. BUSTED!

When I was stationed at Ft. Ord the geniuses in the Army had the new recruits clearing poison oak and burning it. There were a lot of sick recruits that day.

If you'll forgive the aside isu, the military'n brush-clearin' seem to have a way about findin' results other than jus' what'z desired:
I'm reminded of a certain Air Force Sgt.'n his crew who decided that burnin' the undergrowth wuz the way'da go.
The bomb-dump that they set fire to burned for 8 dayz'z I recall.
From 5 milez away you could watch the shock-waves roll through the air towardz you'n when they arrived they were potent enough to pop yer earz.
I now return you back to your regularly scheduled program.
(Well, Phil started it!)

Not really a "silly" injury. However, a month ago i woke up with a headache and it got worse through out the day along with my neck stiffening up. at the end of the day i got home at 6pm and went right to bed to try and sleep it off. i slept for about 30 minutes before i woke up with an extremely horrendous sharp pain in my temples. i tried to move my head but couldnt cause my neck was so stiff and my headache has pounding so bad when i did try. but the really scary part was i couldnt move my eyes to look around, when i tried my headache only got worse. needless to say i decided to go to the hospital at 4am. once there the doctors thought i had menegitis (sp) and my room was quarantined for 24 hours till they realized it was not menengitis. why it took so long to find that out i dont know. then they thought it was viral menegitis and agian quarantined my room for another 24 hours. after that they said they had no idea what i had. all the while my headache was pounding and still could move my head or eyes for 4 days. even after a month i still get headaches 4-5 times a week with extremely sharp pain in my temples. they still have no idea what i had after 15-20 blood samples and 3-4 cultures. but i did get some good medicine for my headache!!

Wow...that's pretty freakin scary. I had something similar happen to me once, but it was gone in a day and not quite as severe as you had it and was mostly all in the side of my neck. It was muscle spasms which I think was due to stress.
