Ok, here we go. So my very irgnorant friend thinks that his stock 92 Mazda Miata will beat a stock S2000 (AP1 or AP2) on a road coarse. Lets here what everyone has to say before I make my own call. The coarse is going to Road America because thats the only coarse i live near.

Drive Stewie hard daily.
Drive Miata's hard usually once 'r twice a week. I've alodda respect for the Miata'z, but, with both in stock livery, isu'z on the money: no contest. But, except for your unrealistic friend Army, I think everybody already knew that, din't we? Truth be told, I'd venture that yer friend knowz'itt too. Java

I've never bee passed by a Miata. They hold me up every track event I've been to. Depending on the driver, you should blow the doors off a stock Miata.

owned a miata, last body style, was a pretty decent all around driver. I thought the handling was fantastic, you had to drive it really hard to "enjoy" it. I say I owned a miata, because after my first test drive in an S, I realized that was the benchmark. Although the miata handles well, the S is much tighter all around, and has obviously alot more power, which should pretty much give you your answer there....

As I've mentioned before, I almost bought a Miata. The local dealership has one, and I test drove it, and fell in love. That car was MINE, up until I found an S2000 for $1000 cheaper in Iowa. After I drove the S2000, I was trying to remember what kind of car that dealership here in town has, and why I ever considered buying it.

It will be a cold day in hell on February 30th with the Devil handing out sweaters to all residenrts when a stock Miata beats a stock S2000. Or as Car & Driver once said:
"We did not include the Miata in our Porsche Boxter, Mercedes SLK, BMWZ3M comparison test to the S2000 because the S2000 would eat it for lunch and not even bother to spit out the bones" |

Not to knock down the Miata one iota......It'll have a much larger role in auto history than the S2000, and is a fine car. Durable, fun to drive, and good looking......What's not to like? We drive our little Honda race cars around, and love it. Drivinig a Miata is just a different kind of love. A car doesn't have to have stratospheric performance to be excellent. S2Ks 'n Miatas may not totally be apples and oranges.......but they're for sure 2 different sides of the same coin. Regards, Jagg Last edited by jagg : 03-26-2008 at 09:25 AM. LOL not a chance you would leave him at the start line. Sure maybe it can handle better (due to lack of power) but thats not enough to keep him in the game.

In 99' I bought a 99' 10th anniversary Miata, the cool looking blue one, and put a turbo from bell labs, a hard dog comp roll cage, and a new exhast, clutch, and intake. It went from 140hp to about 260hp at he crank and the torque was about 240ish. It weighed about 2600lbs with all the extra parts, up from just over 2400lbs. I am confident that my stock 07' S2K would smoke it. I had arguably, the nicest Miata that Mazda ever built with a few performance upgrades and the S2K is just a better car. The Miata's chasis was limiting and it topped out at about 130 and even with the turbo it wasn't as quick as the stock S2k. I know that there are Miatas out there that have been heavily modified and stripped that can beat an S2K but stock vs. stock or even a modestly modified Miata can't take the S2k, they are just in different classes. I am a big fan of that generation Miata but, even back in 99' I shold have bought the S2K. The problem was that I had 2 other Miatas before and at the time the local dealership wouldn't let me even test drive the S2K and they were asking a ridiculous 45K for the ones they had...remember those days??? I got the top dog Miata for 26,000 and did 8,000 of mods for a total of 34,000. It seemed like the right move at the time and I loved that car but I love the S2K even more.

In 2004, Mazda built the Mazdaspeed Miata. Turbocharged, 178 hp, 17" wheels, upgraded suspension, 2500 lbs. sold for $26,000.
This was a VERY cool car. If the S2000 didn't exist, the Mazdaspeed would be in my garage. Almost bought a used one last year, drove it, liked it, but it had been flogged and was not in great shape. If you ever get a chance, drive one. It's not the caliber of an S2000, but it's still a VERY fun car. ![]()

Agree with you there Don, drove a new Mazda Miata prior to my s2000 purchase and it was a real nice drive. More interior room and smoother ride. But it does not have the power and wickedness the s provides. Thats the main difference for me.

Neil, thanks for mentioning the interior space. The Miata has a lot more room than the S2K and the trunk is quite a bit bigger and the cupholders are actually cupholders. I think these things really point out the differences in philosophy between the cars. The S2K is meant for a higher level of driving while the Miata is meant for great driving in everyday use. This may be a different discussion completely but I am compelled to bring it up anyway. I think the S2K is always going to be unfairly compared to STI, Evo, Supra, 350Z, and others becuas it is 1) not understood by the masses, and 2) such an amazing piece of engineering both on paper and in real life that it trancends the class that it is in and begs to be stacked against everything else. I'm not saying that it is the best car in the world nor do I pretend it is the fastest or best looking but it is one of those special cars that, quite frankly, I am amazed that conservative Honda built in the first place, and automotive history will remember it...
I don't know about you guys, but I could see myself keeping this thing and putting around in it on weekends in about 30 years but I can't say the same thing about the evo, sti, or 350z. I supose it is like my grandfather who still drives his 70' 240Z every now and then even though he has a few ferrari's, classic vettes, and too many others to mention. |

JS1 I completely agree. The S is a pure drivers car its not made to be comfy or easy to use everyday. It has one purpose and that is to drive. Trunk space is small interior is small. If you buy this car you have to know why you want it. Sure we cant beat everyone in a straight line. Throw us on a track (with the car) and we really start to be down right annoying to anything else stock out there. I have always owned cars that drive good but rather an underdog in the straights. Its fun picking on 4.6 Mustangs in a 1.6 Mini Cooper S and winning lol.
