A couple of years ago I raced a 6MT '03 G35, and it may have been driver error, but I was about a car length on him. He had an intake, and exhaust. I just had my old exhaust.

This guy is claiming that the AP2 is an improvement over the AP1. Not sure if that means that the AP1 is faster than the 350z or g35 tho. The results say that the AP2 is quicker in the 1/4mi in 14.4sec, 0-60 in 6.4sec. Im curious to know what were their results from testing the AP1.

Am I the only one thinking you guys are crazy?! The G35 is a 3.5L V6 with MUCH more torque than the S2k. As much as we love our cars, we need to realize these cars are in 2 different classes. A stock G35 will beat a stock S2000. Sorry but someone needs to slap you guys down to reality. A lot of my friends drive G35s and those cars are much faster than our S2000s. However, even G35 owners admit that our car is much more fun to drive.

negative the g35 is not faster and as much as you guys don't want to admit it the ap2 is faster honda built it to be quicker check just about any car magazine such as road & track the ap1 does 0-60 in over 6sec the ap2 does 0-60 in under 6 the most common I have seen is 5.7 sec also I have raced my friends 03 and my other friends 02 and have never lost to either of them on multiple occasions..... I have nothing against the ap1 I will agree with who ever says it is more fun to drive than the ap2 but the ap2 was made to out perform the ap1...

Ray, sorry to say but your wrong about that. I have a co-worker with an 03 g35 and we did a little test run when i first bought my S. He got it off the line better than i did, but not by much. I was able to pull on him only when he shifted, but never really pulld away by any means to say that S is faster or his g35 was faster. It was even for the most part.

Does anyone else see something wrong with the 03 s2000? Perhaps it was the tester's fault?

I owned an 03' 350z (same motor as you all know), almost the same 0-60 ( 350 2nd gear seemed to be the weakest point), But 3rd to 4th gear is where that car comes alive. Seems that it would be quicker the the S. In all honesty tho the S is much more fun to drive

They are 2 different classes but the S is still quicker. While the G35 is fun to drive it's still a 3600 pound pig compared to the svelte 2800 pounds for an AP2. That gives it an weight/hp ratio of about 12.6 while the S is about 11.7. Less weight/hp = quicker for the S.

they're all independent magazine tests... with a REAL driver the results would be different.

one example (though CERTAINLY not even close to the "only" example) Ranger over on corvette forums and Jamie Furman are some of the best drivers out there when it comes to extracting every single ounce out of their cars...

'02 Z06 - Ranger
Bone Stock Stock Tires……11.81@117.26 with a 1.78 60'

from Car and Driver:
GM says the Corvette 5.5 will reach 60 miles per hour in less than four seconds and polish off the quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds. Considering we've had trouble slipping 460-hp Vipers under the four-second mark and that a Z06 has never hit 60 in less than 4.3 seconds by our hands or reached 1320 feet in less than 12.7 seconds, it's possible we won't be able to substantiate these claims

---- 11.80s and 12.70s are MILES apart...

'06 Z06 - Jamie Furman

Bone Stock Stock Tires……10.981@128.90 1.77 60'

from MotorTrend
We bolted our own test equipment to a car at GM's Milford Proving Ground and found it had grunt enough to hurl this 3147-pound coupe to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds, and nail the standing quarter in 11.5 seconds at 127.1 miles per hour.

---- 5+ tenths is a big deal

its all in the driver... but then again not many people drag race our cars knowing the clutch and the diff are prone to damage even at stock power levels, so unless someone decides to throw a puddy rear end, a hd comp clutch setup and some driveshaft shop axles in, we'll never know. and even then it wont be "bone stock" by definition.

I realize the weight difference between the 2 cars, but you cannot deny that fact that we simply lack torque.

Would you be willing to bet your pink slip that you could beat a G35 in a quarter mile? If you're answer is yes, I will stfu right now

Regardless what it says on paper, I would not put my S up against a G35. I have driven way too many to know the difference

236hp/218tq @ the rear wheels vs. a stock s2k i've seen anywhere between 195-210 rwhp

Wow. You are wrong wrong wrong. The s2000 is faster than the g35..... The ap2 and the ap1 are about the same speed.......... When I was stock I beat 3 ap2's in my ap1 I guess that means the ap1 is faster? The answer is their speeds are so close its really hard to say.

The torque difference between the two engines is something like 80-100 ft-lbs ((depending on model year) and the weight difference is something between 800-1000 pounds depending on options. So even though it has more torque on paper the practical difference is negligible. One of the reasons I didn't get a G35 was that it weighs almost as much as my 4WD Nissan pickup. The VG33ER in my truck has been modified to put out more power than the VQ35DE in the Infiniti but I wouldn't put money on my truck to beat a G35 or my S even though the truck has more torque and HP. As for the pink slips, nobody else drives my equipment and I quit racing 14 years ago (dirt track and offroad - no drags except for the occasional mud pit).

It's all in the driver, and the track. Depending on the track, sometimes the car doesn't even matter. When I was in the academy our instructor brought his Porsche 911 racecar to demonstrate a point on the first day.

A large parking lot used and the track was made with cones with 's' turns, hairpins and a couple straight aways. He drove the 2 ton, 250 hp Crown Vic around a lap. Then he got into the 92 (or 91) 911. It had a roll cage, gutted interior, and other stuff that kept it from being street legal. It was 2800 lbs with 350 whp. Did a lap in that one.

The 911 was faster, but only by half a second.

If I can remember right, the average lap was about 75 - 80 seconds.

Let's see how long it takes before someone claims a Crown Vic is faster than a gutted Porsche and posts their power to weight and torque differences.

haha why we talkin about Fords and Porsches? I thought this was a S2000 vs G35 debate? Ok maybe I shouldve reworded my statement. When I said the G35 is faster, I meant in everyday driving around the city, not on a track or up a twisty mountain.

I sure hope all you guys who think the S2k is faster all have driven a G35. The minute you drive it, you will feel the torque that we are lacking. It is a lot more effortless to accelerate. We might own the G35 on a twisty road up a mtn or even on a track, but not for everyday driving. Cuz cmon, how often are you on a twisty or a track?

But regardless, I chose to buy my S2000 instead of a G37, simply because of how fun our cars are to drive! What do you guys think if the new G37 convertible?

It's on our list of things to look at since we need a nice sometimes 4-people hauler sort of thing (only thing we have to carry more than 2 people is her FJ Cruiser). The only question is engine reliability. Does the VQ37 take after the VQ35 (great engine) or the VQ40 (not good - search "VQ40 timing chain")?

There are a couple variations of the VQ35
VQ35DE 2003-2004 287hp
VQ35DE Rev Up 2005-2006 300 hp (had a higher redline)
VQ35HR 2007-2008 306hp

VQ35DE Rev Up Version had a terrible oil consumption problem. Some as bad as 1qt/500 Miles. My 03 was great (DE), never had any nit picky stuff go wrong. I know the VQ has won awards for being a great motor but theres a ton of ppl with the oil issue out there. Nissan replaced so many motors, If anything I would hope the VQ37 is better...

Oil Consumption FTMFL!!

If both cars drive over a cliff, will the G35 hit the bottom first because its heavier ?

Hey Neuman, since you have owned both a G35 and a S2k, what are you thoughts on this debate?

What was the speed at which both cars were traveling at when they left the cliff? That coupled with the weight distribution would determine which car would hit first... plus the geographical location could change what would happen.... Oh and which way is the wind blowing =]

why dont we just enjoy the drive isnt that what its about?

Why does it matter really ? They're completly different cars. I've come close to buying a G35 in the past, I've had them as rental vehicles several times, I think they're a fun little 4 door car, very civilized and pretty quick.
Personally I'm not as much of a fan of the new 3.7 with the seven speed, it just doesn't seem as smooth as the old 5 speed auto.
