Monticello Mountain Romp - November 17

Monticello Mountain Romp - November 17
It's time for the second First Annual Monticello Mountain drive, hike around THE University of VA (if we can find enough spaces to park) and BBQ at Jinx's Pit's Top BBQ drive (I couldn't make that name up if I wanted to).

Mark November 17th for the second Monticello Mountain Romp in beautiful Charlottesville, VA. We pass TJ's house, drive some really nice twisty back roads, see lots of colorful scenery and say goodbye to Summer and hello to Fall. This will be a mildly spirited drive but nothing that a new owner can't handle. The drive should be around 2.5 hours. We'll go by Monticello, the University of Virginia, Kluge Estate (A great vineyard. I'm trying to make arrangements for a tour) for some fine wines (and maybe a taste or two), and then go for a late lunch/early dinner at Jinx's Pit's Top BBQ with (maybe the most eccentric owner you've ever met) some of the best BBQ you've ever eaten.

We'll get a special rate at the Holiday Inn in the shadow of Tom Jefferson's house at 10 rooms. I'm thinking about adding a second drive on Sunday or lengthing the Saturday drive to include the Blue Ridge and some really fine twisty roads. Stay tuned for more hotel and drive information.

All righty now...we're back from Asia and about as jet-lagged as two people can be but it's time to get this show on the road...sign up now for the Monticello Mountain Romp and take part in the last drive of the year for the central VA area...

Here are a few pix from last years Monticello Mountain Romp:

Okay, Jonathan and I did the drive today (minus the part where we drive down a gravel road and ford the Rivanna River). The drive has something for everyone, scenery, twisties, and, don't forget, cows....cows and more cows (as well as a vulture or two). The schedule is:

Saturday morning at 9:00am, we leave the Holiday Inn and start the drive. The drive should take about 1.5 to 2 hours.

At noon, it's off to Jinx's BBQ for lunch (be prepared to be overawed by the architecture:

and then after lunch around 2:00pm or so, it's off on a short drive over the mountain once again to Kluge Vineyard where you can mill about aimlessly or try 5 of Kluge's finest wines (3 oz pours so be careful) for $10. If you're cheaper, there are other alternatives and if you're still hungry, there is food and some fine pastry).

We'll return to the hotel for a bit of rest and relaxation and then it's a casual dinner to be catered by Anna's (a Charlottesville tradition for over 3 days...okay, I made that part up, Anna's has been making pizza for over 20 years), and partying.

Sunday morning, it's goodbye time and eating at the Waffle House (a new sensation for those of you from north of the Mason-Dixon line) and the drive home.

We have a rate of $124.99 per night for rooms at the Holiday Inn but are trying to get it lower. I'll post updates as I get them (I just lay out the drives and figure out restaurants and food for attendees, someone else does the hotel stuff).

Okay, Justin finally found out why the nice lady at Holiday Inn was trying to schtupp us with a $30 charge over the internet rates..we could change the reservations if we wanted...so we said "thank you very much" and ("take a hike"). Therefore, if you want to stay Saturday night, you can get a better rate by going to the website Charlottesville Holiday Inn at Monticello than we can get by guaranteeing a bunch of rooms. I've already made our reservations for Saturday night on the website, you can too..rates run from $95.95 to $152.95 so you have a variety to choose from. After you've made your reservation, please PM me (kgf3076) so that we know how many people to expect for pizza Saturday night.
