Planning to buy S2000
Hi. I am new here and have some questions about S2000.
I am planning to buy S2000. Some people told me that its loud inside the car. is this true? I currently have a 05 Lexus IS300. I am planning to trade it in. You know how they changed everything after 04 S2000. I herd that the rpm goes up to 9k with the old ones like 01-03. and the new ones go up to about 7.5k? Is this true? I cant trade it in yet because i dont know if i should get the new S2000 or the older versions. Thanks |

First off, the s2000 is a really nice car, and if you ended up getting one you will love. I have a 2000 s2k, and im not going to lie, its a little loud inside, but i think the ap2 s2000 are a little quieter. The ap1 s2000 redlines a 9000rpm, and the ap2 redlines at 8500rpm and has a little more tourque which is nice for daily driving. Both are great cars and you will find people who swear the ap1 is better, and people who swear the ap2 is better. I luv em both

THEY ARE VERY LOUD IF YOU HAVE AN INVIDIA EXHAUST!!! (turns engine off) Otherwise they are pretty quiet...

Drive one. It'll tell you right away if it's the right car for you. (and drive a used one so you can take it over 6000 rpm)

I just bought one about a week ago after searching for z3s, mr2s, and any other convertable 2 seater that was good on gas. S2000 is hands down the best bang for the buck w/ good gas milage as well. If you used to the Lexus, S2000 will seem loud, and you will hear noises that you didnt hear in your lexus--thats the nature of the beast, its a production race car you can drive daily, but dont forget that--drive one!!

Drive both and pick which one you like the best. I am a diehard for AP1's. Would never think of getting an AP2, even if I had to buy another.

AP1 - old model but RPM goes higer.
AP2 - new model but RPM doesnt go high as AP1. I would like my car to look nice and have nice performance. Which would cost more. buy AP1 and change the parts to make it look like its new model. OR buy AP2 and tune it up so that RPM goes higher. |

I bought an 07 new. It keeps up no problem with the earlier models and is better at some things I am told. A bit cushier but hardly cushy. It's a bloody great car. I wanted zero miles and a warranty so my choices were limited. New or new. Claims of no torque are crap and I'm sick of hearing it. I does great for a 4 cylinder engine and turns into an animal at 6 grand. If I had to change anything I would firm the rear suspension just the slightest bit. It's a touch mushy during spirited driving with two people and seems oddly out of place on this great car.
Any year S2000 is great if you can find one that has not been thrashed. Shouldnt be difficult though. |

This is the whole basis of my argument for the AP1, plus the extra revs.

Here's a quick breakdown:
2000-2003 are AP1's. 9k redline, 240 hp. 16" stock wheels. 00-01 had plastic rear windows, from 02 on it's been glass. 2004-current are AP2's. 8200 redline, 237 hp, 10+ tq over AP1. 17" wheels (04-05 v1, 06-07 v2, 08-09 v3). Redesigned front/rear bumpers and head/taillights. From 06 on they are Drive by Wire, no longer a throttle cable and have come with VSA - a form of traction control. Some people like having it, others don't - but it can be turned off. My opinion - think of it like a condom: better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it. There are other differences but in general those are the more major ones. AP2's are known for being a bit more 'cushy', not as 'raw' as AP1's - but I can promise you whether you go AP1 or AP2 you will love the car, it's a true Driver's Car.

Where in the south are you? Let us know and I am sure someone close to you will chime in.
I have posted this a couple of times but I thought I would again. Especially if you are coming from a FWD car. Just a bit of advice which ever car you decide on. Take your time and learn what the car likes and more importantly what it doesn't like i.e. mid-corner lifts of the gas, mid-corner shifts up or down in and out of v-tec etc. etc. This car is awesome to drive and that is a great thing and also something you need to respect. It is a hell of allot of fun and you will get back to the house with a huge a$$ grin on your face BUT don't get cocky and she will treat you very well. Just take it easy at first. Do some reading on line about others experences and enjoy are car. Good luck. mlc |

mlc - you made some great points. This car demands a level of respect and it's very important to LEARN this car. If you do - it will be incredibly rewarding, if you drive it recklessly and without paying attention, you'll find out how quickly things can get ugly as many S2K owners (myself included) have found out.
Go on YouTube and search for a video under S2000 Life ... a section of the video is actually dedicated to "Have you spun your S2000?"

Nobody in their right mind would sell an '07 for 8k. Get the VIN and make sure it's not stolen.

If you want a quiet car the S2K might not be for you.

Get what you can afford saint. I bought mine new on 07, just turned 3,000 miles. It has been a very enjoyable tight nit car to drive. Yes the earlier models have more to rev about but on the new models the vsa works great and warrenty is always nice.
My wife dislikes the car, but I really love this little Honda.....its wicked !! Neil |
