914
BB is Berlina Black (my color) or Black Beauty--take your choice. This is a true story. Only the names have been
changed to protect the innocent.
************************************************** ******************************
************************************************** ******************************
*
I was southbound on I-85, south of Charlotte last Saturday, in BB, just above the speed
limit minding my own business when i glanced in the rear views to check my six
as i am wont to do. Coming up behind at a high rate of speed is a small blue
car. Don is behind me? The blue blur has the left turn signal aflash. I signal
that I am moving right and then take the middle lane.
The blue monster is an old Porsche 914, perhaps the S2000 of its day some 30
years ago. He pulls abreast of BB and slows, perhaps a length ahead. Just like
in BB, an old guy is at the wheel. He looks as if he may also suffer from
testosterone poisoning, a mid-life crisis, or the longing for his long passed youth. I am in 6th gear.
I look over at his after-market dual exhaust and at his still flashing left
turn signal, warning those behind that he wants to enter the emergency lane next
to the wall. Being the good citizen that i am, I start to pull on him a bit,
wanting to get just far enough ahead to illuminate my left turn signal so that
he can get the hint that he should turn his off, and stop advertising that he is
a senior citizen. I am in 6th gear.
As i pull up even, he floors it, his exhaust blares, and he leaves me behind.
I am in 6th gear, speed constant, cruise set, as it was when I first noticed
this 70s relic. I do believe that the old boy wants to give it a go. He eases
off when he sees that BB and I are not engaging. He does not yet know, but the
only action that he can spur me to is to move my left hand to the turn signal
stalk and push it down.
I move again to the fast lane, now behind him with my left turn signal flashing.
He moves to the middle lane; still his left turn signal flashes. I move behind him in the middle lane;
still my left turn signal flashes. I am in 6th gear, cruise set.
Finally, eureka! Mr. 914 figures it out. He turns off the blinker. I give him
a flash of BB's brights, hold it perhaps a count too long, and I am rewarded with a nice reflection of their
candlepower off of his blue paint.
An exit is coming up on the right. Now, no signal, a flick of the steering
wheel, and he cuts across two lanes to ramp off and look for a worthy adversary.
Later, when he is popping tops with his Porsche buddies he will regale them with the story
of shutting down a black Honda convertible; how the driver was scared to engage
his German hotrod; how easily he pulled on the little roadster. What he will
not mention is that now he is concerned that he has early onset Alzheimer's.
Certainly he will not tell them how pretty my lights were.

One day BBcricketta woke up.
He yawned, stretched and walked into the bathroom. Hmm..thought he. No stiffy this morning? Oh well. He turns on the water..splashes his face, opens his eyes, looks in the mirror and screams!!!!!!! OH CRAP! WHEN DID I BECOME 55??? It all comes flooding back to him then. The 35 years of worry and work. The children raised and educated..only to think him a fool.
He hops into his 30 year old S2000 and gets on the highway. Pulls up to a Subakoozi 3800 Mk52..brand new and shiny. He gets that old thrill..it never goes away...maybe I can take this kid!. The kid just looks over and see's some old fool..he shakes his head and goes his own way. Old fools in old, has been sports cars are invisible to him.
Then BB remembers..Old people don't count. They are stupid..usually senile and cant turn their blinkers off. But BB thinks..HEY..I'M not stupid..I don't FEEL any different then when I was 20..I don't THINK any different...I'm just WAY SMARTER!. My only crime is NOT DYING!..For this I become irrelevant??
Oh Well..kids just suck!
Just then a kid in a 2038 Porsche 911 flat18 type71 pulls up. OBviously admiring the old japanese sports car and understanding what it takes to maintain the old jewel. He gives BB the thumbs up and they go off chasing each other down the pike at a spirited pace, enjoying life as it was meant to be.
Well, BB thinks..as he checks his 6 for cops..
ALL kids don't suck.

bb thought all of this about three years ago when he was 55. i wish i could meet woody in the a.m. upon awakening, and i don't mean mr. woodpecker. i wish i had...ahhhhh, nevermind...
if i had of been 20, i would have snicked bb down to 4th with the tach reading about 6000, right on the cusp. when he nailed it, i would have pushed it to the floor, brought forth 237 horses, made the quick shift to 5th, shifted again at about 120 miles per hour, and left his kraut *** to peer at my disappearing tail-lights.
nice work H2O.

it was temptation as defined in webster's: three lanes of deserted interstate, high wall to the left, clear and dry with excellent visibility and a hurrying sundown. the way his car jumped and the sound of his exhaust when he punched it told me he wasn't exactly stock. i'm just no speed-racer. i was like a 16 year old church girl: i really, really want to, but i better not.
as i see it, i am still above ground and taking nourishment, bb is intact, and i am not in jail. i am not having to retain the services of Perry Mason, Esq. to defend me from vehicular homicide charges.
i know what bb can do; i know what me and bb can do; and i am above the fray. maybe next time...selah.
bb
