site is painfully slow

getting a page timeout about 50% of the time. Seems the site has been getting slower recently, but today is almost unusable.

It's been functioning so poorly for the last 24 hours or so that it has been effectively "down" at times.

Hard to say if the issue is server or network related. The automated emails were also messed up (not emailing at their normal time), but that doesn't really tell us anything more.

I can discern this much:
  • yesterday, the site was intermittently responding to pings but today we get to a router on mzima.net in LA and the pings die.
  • the site is hosted/handled by internetbrands.com and their web server is only intermittently responding to port 80 requests as well (and a tracert also dies at the same mzima.net router as above).
  • internetbrands.com has a different IP address from s2000.com but is definitely on the same network. While having a different IP address doesn't guarantee it's on a different server, it's possible (perhaps even probable) and so it leads me to think the issue is network and not server.
  • whatever it is, it's downright painful.
Here is a nifty tool a friend recommend to me awhile ago: www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com Great for checking to confirm if the problem is at the web site you are trying to reach or if it's just your own network or your own computer that is fubar.

Couldn't even dial up today! Had to use the backup computer and that seemed to work but only after watching that little "busy" wheel put on some serious mileage! I am running the malicious software removal tool just in case, who knows? lol

kgf, i thought you were only into mechanical stuff. you know about dos too? i agree with you.

i'm pretty sure it was a dos attack. all it does is slowing or shutting down a network it if it lag is high enough.

There is no way for us to know what it was without insider knowledge of their network; however, all of the symptoms do seem to support that it was a DOS attack.

Yeah, maybe it is an angry s2k'er attacking the site.....

Naw, I still doubt it was DOS attack. The ISP would know it pretty quickly. Besides, the site has been slow for a while, only became unusable last Friday. I suspect this ISP is not scaling their server farm adequately. They probably fired up a new app over the weekend, or a major weekend maintenance outage, and performance tanked.

What can we do? Keep an eye out. If it happens again, time for ISP shopping.

dude, you obviously missed the message they posted earlier. it clearly stated that it indeed was an attack.

by the way, ISP can only sit and watch as an DOS attack happens. there's nothing they can do. maybe trace the attackers, but...too complicated to explain...if the bandwidth is large enough, everything will come to a screeching halt.

i'm an IS major so i know these kinds of stuff like the back of my hand.

LOL Dude, congrats on the major, tho I think you might be a little confused about bandwidth and screeching halts.

I did read their DOS explanation. I just don't believe it.

Also, it takes too long to explain, but all major internet presences have technologies in place to filter attacks up their internet pipeline far enough away to keep their sites up. This site was crushed for days.

It could have been a DOS attack, common on forum sites. But WE will never know. This site has been slow for weeks. Still is. If the site suddenly crashed, I might buy it. Still suspect it is ISP CYA.

Yes, you can filter packets and prevent them from reaching your network (hacking), but you can't redirect incoming packets. Imagine traffic hour, how do you filter or redirect it?

All DOS does is flood the network with requests. It will crash the servers if the they can't handle the incoming packets.

DOS does not take down a network instantly, because you seldom have enough bandwidth to do so. It takes some time, first lag, then crash.

Depends on what is being attacked and who is doing the attacking. It's amazing what can be accomplished by either really pissed off or really determined people who particularly want to bring something (or someone) to their knees. Perfect example ocurred in August: http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-10305200-245.html

Regardless, by now, this should have been handled by calling in the big guns at the provider. If the current issue is still more of the same, then I would be concerned about the level of professional support being received.

Of course, I don't claim to be an IS major or anything. What I really want to know is just how well do any of us actually know the backs of our hands?

But did you have to look at it to describe it?

I dunno, but unless it's a pic of my left hand with wedding ring on it, I don't think I could pick the backs of my hands out of a line up. You're a better man than I.
