My tires are rubbing
I recently purchased new tires for my 05 S2000. I used to have 225 40 R18 and decided to replace them with 235 40 R18. Now I hear rubbing in the back when I go over bumps or big dents on the road. This mostly happens in the morning when it is cold. Could this have something to do with bad shock absorbers or maybe I need stiffer springs. I know that the tires cannot be too wide. The car is not even lowered.
Thanks, Jose |

If it wasn't happening before, and is happening now - it has gotta be the tires....right?
Maybe the offset of the rims is not enough for the clearance. Good luck solving this, but I think you might be buying another set of tires soon. With 18" rims, shouldn't your aspect ratio be a little less than 40? |

Not sure whats funny... its a legit question if you dont know about wheel sizes. I assume you have different rims not stock? There probably not the best choice for fitment of our car and thats why, because 225 in the rear... Your should run around 245's I run 255's in the rear 225 in the front. What wheels are on there and if you can figure out the specs too, if not try and get a picture of the wheels see what I can figure out by that.

Find out where they are rubbing. If it is the fender, roll the fender. If it is the springs, you will need new wheels with the correct off set or a different set of smaller tires.
As already stated above: The old tires didn't rub, the new ones do. It must be the tires.

Jbeni it might be worth just selling the new tires and replace with the old size that gave you no problems, or pay for work to get the clearance you need.

I appreciate the constructive input, don't need the sarcasm from the experts. Frankly I am disappointed. I thought that this forum was to help the less savy people like me. Guess I was wrong.
I have seen S2000s with wider tires and lowered. I'm sure that there's something that I can do to fix it, i.e. stiffer springs. If this is a viable option, can someone tell me what type of springs could I use. If you have something constructive please let me know, otherwise please keep the smart comments to yourself. Jose |

Hey like I said start of with the wheels, If your 100% sticking with those wheels there is a way to make them work, You will probably have to do the fender rolling which is not a big deal. Maybe some more minor things but first thing to start off is to know what size wheels and offsets your running to determine exactly how far you will need to go to make them work. |

little trick I learned on the fenders is a baseball bat (wooden of courseput the bat between the wheel and the fender and feed it it slowly as someone else in wording the clutch and gas. that will save you $50 bucks everyone has one laying around

OK guys I get it. I'm an ignorant dumb ass when it comes to cars. The issue that I have is that the tires are not too wide. If the stock rear tire is 245, why am I having problems with a 235? Additionally only the rear tires rub, and only when the weather is cold. When it's warm, the rubbing doesn't happen.

Because of the OEM wheel offsets. They are correct for that tire size. Your wheels are not the correct offset for that size of tire.

The take-home point here is that if what you had before worked, go back to that tire size. That's by far the cheapest option you have. Another good point mentioned above is that you might able to get away with running a smaller aspect ratio on the 235s....40 seems too high, especially if the offset is holding the tire too far out below the panels.
I really don't have an answer for the cold/hot difference....sorry. |
