Braking bias
OK I'm kind of a mechanical dunderhead, but I have a slight problem I would like advice on: Coasting into a smooth stop at intersections the brakes will grab noticeably. This has been going on since day one and doesn't happen at high speeds so I've never checked it out as a real problem. Still it is a little disconcerting when it happens. I finally decided that it may have something to do with ruts in the road. Asphalt pavement usually ruts more at intersections. The grabbing is not necessarily always in the same direction either, which points back at ruts. So what do you think? Is this something that can be corrected or should I just live with it? (Car is 06 S2000).

I agree on the ruts in the road since it is not consistant.
P.S. Cool screen name.

Sounds like a surface problem since it's so inconsistant. Here in AZ the ruts at intersections are so bad they grab my tires and jerk the car all over the place...
Oh, and I like PIE

Pi, it may be the anti lock braking system. Mine does it on certain rough surfaces or if there is gravel at the stop.

Ruts make my wheels turn slightly at some intersections...
They haven't done anything to my brakes though, that I've noticed.

not just ruts, but sometimes asphalt can sink in the wheel lines and remain higher in the center of the lane. I find this causes braking and acceleration problems.

find a smooth surface and test your brakes. your brakes should never grab or bind. if you are having a brake problem, have it addressed immediately.

You would think if it were the ruts in the road then it would do it when you weren't braking. Have you checked the brakes? Have you pulled the wheels off and taken a look at the pads and rotors? Have you bled the brakes? Could it just be some air or moisture in the brake fluid?
I am funny about brake issues....stopping is NOT overrated! Kevin |

Thanks all for the ideas, No I haven't seen the movie Pi. We bought a big screen several years ago and only watch DVD's anymore. That one hasn't come through yet.
The bias I noted only occurs at intersections at low speed while braking. I'm thinking that the ruts come into play very subtly as one tire grips more pavement (flat) and the other grips less (top of rut). Wheel turns noticeably to one side or the other but the car doesn't lurch too much because I'm at 5 miles per hour or less when it happens. Braking at moderate or even high speeds has never been a problem. I'm not a mechanic of any sort but I will ask to have the brakes checked at next service interval. I do know a lot about asphalt pavement- more ruts at intersections due to stops and starts. Pavement in some parts of the country is more likely to rut than pavement in other parts because of physical properties of the asphalt and temperature gradients. So many of you won't know what I'm talking about and others will say Amen bro. |
