Finally found some Goodyears

I had some work done on my car a few weeks ago. While it was up on the lift, I was checking out my rear tires and noticed only 2-3/32 of tread left as well as a 7 inch long bald/flat spot on the inside of the right rear.

My wife's Sequoia needed tires too, so I figured I would log onto the Tirerack and make one big purchase. That's when I noticed they were completely out of stock for my size for rears. I called them and they had 1 tire in their Georgia warehouse. I called Discount and they only had 4 in the country, but wouldn't give them to me. I went to Big O and they had zero. I thought about buying Dunlop 9000 closeouts on the Tirerack for $120 apiece until the Goodyears were available, but I didn't want to mismatch with the fronts and there was no date for possible re-stocking.

Driving down the road after dropping off my wife's SUV to have her tires installed, I saw a small, hole-in-the-wall place called Tire World and decided to stop in to see if they had them. I figured a small place would have a shot at having them since everyone goes to all the known places. Well, I was right. They did have them, but they were $357 apiece!! They are listed on the Tirerack for $224 apiece. Plus, they charged me an additional $30 to get them there the next day, so the total came to $770 for 2 rear tires. So, my options were to try to make the current ones last (dangerous), buy Dunlops and then Goodyears ($750-$800), or buy Goodyears at an outrageous price. So, I bought the expensive Goodyears.

Despite our best laid plans Vez, we still seem to get blind-sided by stuff that crops up while we're busy with other things.
I know it ain't much solace, but I'd'a gone the same route. Chancin' the "skins" wasn't an option in my book either.
Darn! Now you're gonna godda go scuff 'em up.
Be well.

Goodyears

Are you happy with the new rubber? Are they better than the original factory tires? What sizes did you order?

Oh yeah...I'm extremely happy with the tires. I think they are the best tire I've ever had. I have 225/40-18 in the front and 255/35-18 in the rear.

I can't compare them to the OEM because when I bought the car, it had S02's on the front and Toyo's on the rear. When they needed replacement, I got a set of Firestones that I had had on my Z28 and was very happy with. When they were discontinued, I had to find another tire and I tried the Bridgestone RE750. HATED THEM! I saw how well the Goodyears were being raved about in Tire Rack's reviews and the Car & Driver test review and decided to try them. Haven't looked back.

I wouldn't be surprised you didn't like the 750's. Not the same league of tires as the 050s or top Eagles. I'd like to hear how you like the Eagles after a few months myself. Maybe Goodyear has gotten better. I gave the GS-C two tries on a 92 Corvette I used to have before I swore them off. Great when new, but get hard and slippery pretty fast. Fell in love with Dunlop D40-M2's, which lasted a good long time even with track abuse. But they haven't been made in years. Let us know how they're doing for you later in the year.

Best tires on the market right now. This is my second set of rears. I bought the original set about a year ago and think they are the best tires I've ever had. I drove 20k miles in 2006 and I installed them back in March. There was 1 month between track days (September) where I left the stock rims on with the RE750's to try and wear them out a bit. You could probably say I got at least 17k miles on the first set of Goodyears. Getting 17k out of the rears is a miracle on this car.

I had GS-C's on my '95 Z28 when I bought it back in the day and I agree with you. I replaced them after 30k and they were really slippery at the end.
