Tires
I'll be going to a track for the first time within a couple of weeks. Today, I noticed my rear driver side tire was low. Upon inspection, it has a nail in the sidewall. I checked my front tires as well and the front left tire also has a nail in the tread.
I figure that I might as well get some decent tires that'll treat me good at the track and as well as auto x-ing. I can get a deal($212 installed) on some Riken Raptors for the rear, but I've read a bunch of bad things about them. I'd be willing to spend up to 300 installed for just the rear. Anyone have any experience with tires in that price range that they'd recommend?

You need to match the front and rear tires or the handling will deteriorate. Bridgstone Potensa RE-01R's are perfect and not as expensive as S02's in 16"

Thanks desmo4. I'll look into the RE-01R's. I've read goodthings so far about them. Im also looking at Fuzion tires. They're supposed to be pretty good tires for the price.

Fuzions cheap but I have heard bad things. Lousy in the wet.
I am running Falken 452s from Discount tire Direct. Great tires and reasonable. http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/home.do

Hey Dude are you running stock rims? Alot of my friends are running Raptors and they HATE them. I had BFG's G-force and they were Great, pricey but good. Right now I have Yokohama S-Drive's and just got done trackin' them at Willow. They held up GOOD but they had a long break in period. They in my opinion they are not as good as Bridgestone Potenza S-02 but you get a longer treadwear with the S-drives. Also where you live makes a BIG difference he in SO CAL hardly ever rains so I can't judge wet conditions. If your looking for super savings and decent quailty Kuhmo isn't bad good bang for your buck!

i'm a big fan of khumos as well - not too expensive and better than others in their price class, IMO. i, however, have not yet tracked my car.

i have the raptors and so far they have been alot better then the tires that were on it. i will say that grip to sideways has little to no warning not even a skreech or anything. they also have a good tread disign for the down pours that happen here in panama city fl.

Since we're talking about tires, and I know next to nothing about them, what's the difference between tire A and tire B? How do you tell the difference in performance?

Oh and UTQG is the rating for how many miles it will last. Just take the number and put a decimal after the first digit. Then multiply by 7200. So a 220 tire is 2.2 x 7200. So a rough estimate would be around 14 - 15,000 miles. But remember we cant rotate our tires, so that means you will probally get about 2 - 3,000 miles less than that. My 02.

Lol, I think there was some confusion, mostly due to how little I know. When I said tire A and tire B, I just meant between any two tires and not a specific rating. I'm mainly trying to figure out what I should look for when buying a tire.

![]() Well, then just look for the ratings I explained about. That is what you should be considering when buying a tire.....

I've decided to get the Kuhmo ASX tires. 420 tread wear with an AA traction rating and every single thing I've read about them is good.
I was looking at the Fuzion ZR1s and the Nitto NT-450s, but both seem to have problems. My friend, manager at Walker Tire, said that hes had nothing but problems with the Fuzion ZR1s and he recomended the Kumo's or also the Nitto tires. I've read that the Nitto NT-450s are more of a straight line tire and doesn't do well with turns at a track. Thanks all for your help.

I've got Raptors and they have been great on my daily driver S. Never been to the track but they've been great on the twisties. Good grip and no squealing. I'm pretty aggressive in the turns (maybe not as ballsy as some of you) and I have had no problems at all. Mine were about $80 each installed. I don't know what there is to hate about them, but then again, I had Cooper Zeons when I bought the car and those SUCKED.
Chaz, what about them do they hate?

Chaz, the thread kinda got buried. I was wondering what your friends hate about the Raptors.

By "racing tires" do you mean an actual track only tire, or a nice grippy street tire?
