18in wheels

Hello, Im new here and looking for some info. I have a 2002 S2000 with 18in wheels.......235/40/18 fronts & 265/35/18 rears. I bought the car with them on and have never had any trouble with them hitting or rubbing. I do have trouble with the rears wearing from the inside out pretty bad. Do I need to buy the SPC adjustable ball joints I see on Ebay or is there adjustment on there from the factory, and should there be ENOUGH adjustmeny form the factory ? Also, Im in need of replacing the tires, is the size set up im running ok, or is there a better 18in setup ? And the last question........what tires work best for the money, I was looking to get Bridgstone RE 760 sport or RE960AS.......any other suggestions ? Anyone went with the Dunlop 9000 ?

as far as tire wear:

nothing needed other than a competent alignment shop!

my car is pretty damn low and i dont have issues with tire wear... your toe in the rear is probably out of whack.

What size wheels are you running typical running i would think is 225 fronts 245 or 255 rears 265 is pretty you should deff be able to run 255's which would give you some more room, if you want to stick with 265 you can also run a more negative camber which you can do with oem adjustments

oem size, but it shouldnt matter... you can run a lot of camber and have pretty even tire wear provided the toe isnt all junked up.

When i was thinking he was getting wear from rubbing fender, but running a big camber does it not make the inside of the tire have much more contact then the outside?

wear is "not" from rubbing or hitting, just needing adjustment

Yea... depends on the width of the wheel depending what size you could run, 265's could be over kill but if you like the big tire than go for it, you could deff run 225 in the front, and deff 255s in the rear maybe even 245's depends, but if your not rubbing with 265 i would say you have a pretty high offset.

sounds like the previous owner may have put an aggresive offset wheel on the stewie and to keep it from rubbing he runs alot of - camber. Do you have any pics of the car?

My only thought if it was an aggressive offset you would think he wouldn't go with 265s, I think he just wanted a meaty looking tire pics would help for sure

What I run on the streets:
F 18 X 8.0 +51 225/40/18
R 18 X 9.0 +63 245/35/18

With the UK alignment:
Front
Caster Left 6° 45"
Caster Right 6° 45"
Camber Left -1° 00"
Camber Right -1° 00"
Toe Left 0° 0"
Toe Right 0° 0"
Total Toe 0° 0"

Rear
Camber Left -2° 00"
Camber Right -2° 00"
Toe Left 0° 20"
Toe Right 0° 20"
Total Toe 0° 40"

No real tire wear issues that I have come across. I am pretty low and my rear tires are tucked.

Tires:
BF Goodrich Comp Force TA KDW

seems like most of the questions have been answered well by the above posts. i will chime in on tires. i have the RE960AS's on mine and absolutely love them. you will not sacrifice a lot of grip at all, but you will get the stability of an all season tire. i have had mine for almost a year and the car is much more sure footed in inclimate weather. when it is nice out, it still handles like it is on rails. if you dd stewie, this is definitely the tire you should look into.

Thanks lonestar, I was looking at the 960 as a 2nd option. I live in Michigan and dont drive it in bad weather so I was not to up on the all season tire, but if you think they work good maybe I will give them a thought. As for pics............I dont know how to post them. Does it say on the rims what offset they are ?

if you're not going to drive it in bad weather, stay with max performance summer tires. just be careful in the rain.

I run OZ Superleggras with Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Spec,( whew, quite a mouthful) Love the tires but admittedly I have only a few hundred on them so far. Nice and quiet and very sticky.

F 18 X 8.0 +48 225/40/18
R 18 X 9.0 +55 265/35/18

I do experience tire rub front and back though. will need to get the fenders rolled and/or set a negative camber.

I bought the rims used and had them powdered coated with a dark gunmetal.

easy rule of thumb...

slight inside tire wear...camber (as in over the period of years)

excessive inside tire wear...toe (as in over the period of months)

being a 240 guy...we tend to run super wide and low offset wheels on our cars under rolled/pulled fenders (who needs over fenders...BAH)...with this comes the need to run quite a bit of camber...for some odd reason people tend to think excessive tire wear comes from camber...it most certainly does not...A LOT of current generation, rwd coupes and sedans actually come with 1-2 deg camber stock now...look at the back of a BMW or Lexus next time its driving down the freeway...it carries quite a bit of front and rear camber

the issue stems from improper toe alignment (and sometimes caster can play into this...though kinda rare)...adding slight amounts of toe is good for certain styles of racing (in drifting it helps to have a slight amount of toe in as it helps with oversteer)...but most cars alignment angle goes to hell once you lower the car...even an inch can completely ruin the alignment angle...generally with multi-link suspension cars...when you lower the car...you start to gain camber as well as negative toe (more so in the rear of the car)...because the wheels are forcing themselves in toward one another...this creates a very nasty wear and handling situation because both tires are basically pushing in against the themselves

so yah..with all that said...excess tire wear usually occurs from improper toe alignment and not camber

I have the same wheels and have never rubbed wearing 255's in the rears. I have a stock suspension. I do rub in the front on large dips.
